The "Longer Process" of Fixing Anthem

A May Anthem Update on the BioWare Blog explains that BioWare is still working towards putting Anthem on the right track. This is written by Christian Dailey, Studio Director for the BioWare Austin office in charge of what's next for the multiplayer action/RPG. He says the developers working from their homes have kicked off the Anthem "incubation team" to work on what's next. He also says they plan on more regular communication with everyone about their progress, which he admits "is going to be a longer process." Here's word on their mission:
The Anthem incubation team has kicked off and we are starting to validate our design hypotheses. Incubation is a term we use internally – it essentially means we are going back and experimenting/prototyping to improve on the areas where we believe we fell short and to leverage everything that you love currently about Anthem. We are a small team – about 30-ish, earning our way forward as we set out to hit our first major milestone goals. Spoiler – this is going to be a longer process. And yes, the team is small but the whole point of this is to take our time and go back to the drawing board. And a small team gives us the agility a larger one can’t afford.

We really want this experience to be different for the team and our players, but we know we have some tough challenges to tackle. We want to include you as we go and be open and honest with where we are at and what the expectations are with where we are going. The reality is you will see things that look awesome but end up on the cutting room floor or things that you might think suck that you feel we are spending too much time on – but in the spirit of experimentation this is all OK. We really want to provide you all the transparency we can because of your passion and interest in Anthem. But, with that comes seeing how the sausage is made – which is not always pretty by the way.

Right, I can't really take any of this here serious, it only makes sense now is if it becomes a new game for them to sell.

Ugh, they will never overcome the weaknesses of the engine used, no matter what teams they throw at this.

Interesting, I don't see where the engine is the reason why the game isn't able to have a longer end-game life and better loot drops like a ARPG should have. Performance and looks are great as well as combat. They just needed more content and how the story ended I don't see that as the engine but writers and time.

Paying Youtubers and Streamers to play it, would probably do more for it than fixing things they dont know how to fix.

The trouble with Anthem is that it had nothing going for it other than the flying. The gameplay loop was stale dated, the AI was atrocious, the story was utter nonsense and even the graphics felt uncanny valley because Frostbite seems to be only good for establishing shots. Seriously if you look at the last 8 years for EA it's just been a disaster for most non-Dice projects with Frostbite. The best thing they could do internally would be to ditch it for UE again, royalties to Epic be damned.

It is interesting that they're going to attempt to revive it but I'm not sure what the point is. Anthem never had any real promise or ambition that was worth this sort of effort.

Anthem that was what they promised originally and screwed us on or ..

The 300 million dollar vampire that is Star Citizen

Star Citizen is the scam of the century so far. No doubt in my mind. I could probably win money betting on this scam getting a Netflix documentary between now and 2030. Anyone who puts money in this anno today, I would go full ad-hom on because it would be appropriate for once. Because you actually would be a motherfucking idiot.

As for Anthem? First they have to fix the engine. I assaulted enemies from far away, only to have their entire encampment disappear as I would come closer. They should:
1.) Remove the city hub entirely;
2.) Create a city hub within the open world map;
3.) Also have quest givers outside of the city, which would incentivize exploration and improve immersion immensely;
Controversial idea.) Maybe they should force some close quarter moments in dungeons, where flying is limited or disabled. These moments give meaning to cosmetics, as the open world's scale is too big to appreciate your own and other's looks.

This game is fixable without too much effort I'm sure.

I tried playing this a few months ago and matchmaking took forever and I had to play many of the missions solo which was not fun to do. There's so few new players that it's a chore to even get beyond the the first few missions.

Remember when you owned a Bioware game and in the next Bioware game they gave you something for owning it? It wasn't much but it was cool to see how they rewarded loyalty. In Athem? N7 decals oh cool... only 10 bucks!

It's been over a year since the games release and they are just now doing a post-mortum on the game? It's dead, either give it away for free and add make it pay to win, or just pull the plug on it.

Is there really anyone left interested in "fixing" the game? I would guess not. Give refunds, close it out, call it a day. Try and learn something, this time, EA...;) I can only see a reluctance to throw in the towel and move on as a reluctance to issue refunds for those that want them. I never bought the game as the "demo" warned me off. I don't say that to encourage backwards dev thinking like, "If he hadn't had a demo he might have bought the game." It's like this, poor demos for poor games rarely affect the ultimate outcome and fate of a game. Devs sometimes imagine that without a demo the customer is forced to buy the game before he decides he doesn't want it, and the dev gets paid anyway--even if the customer didn't like the game. Is that where you want to be as a game dev--essentially tricking money from your customer's pockets instead of earning it? No. Because he'll remember what happened the next game you offer him--and he won't buy. Anyway--just make good games with inspiring demos--that's the ticket! Build your rep as a game dev on quality--instead of tricks!
It is well known universally that I do not make mistakes--so, if you should happen across an error in that which I have written, please be assured that *I* did not write it!...:)

Ugh, they will never overcome the weaknesses of the engine used, no matter what teams they throw at this.

I bought this game on sale and played through the single player portion; it's a shame that they couldn't end up with a cohesive vision of what the game is even supposed to be, some of the movement/combat mechanics are pretty cool, but basic systems such as loot design, maps and quests are broken to the point that I don't think they can feasibly be fixed.

Great if they do but it's beginning to sound like a sunk cost fallacy at this point.

LOL an Anthem R&D team. Is this so hard? They have a great combat mechanic, they can't figure out what to do with what they have? Perhaps this is good for EA to have teams like this, but is almost seems like a JR Rising Stars type of team, see who's a keeper or not. Sounds like this is years out. Weird all around.
