Rockstar makes mad cash out of GTA Online, so the more people that have a chance of stumbling into the online the better. They'd make GTAV "free to play" if not for the fear it'd devalue the GTA brand name.
No developer will give its last game, still selling famously and for the foreseeable future, free. Dumbest bussiness decision.
Rest assured, Rockstar *is* getting something from Epic.
Be it money for each GTA5 downloaded, fixed global amount, or variations, or the use of the new Unreal 5 engine for free for a time.
Or a stellar cheap deal for publishing their next game, etc.
If Rockstar wanted the game to get to the most people free, getting nothing for it, they would have picked Steam, obviously.
