Out of the Blue

I'm at the end of my rope with my crappy Fire TV adapter. I got this to replace my even crappier Fire TV Stick, so I guess this is a case of fool me twice, shame on me. The oddest thing about my dissatisfaction is that it centers on how poorly it handles Twitch streams, since both the adapter and Twitch are Amazon products. But I get constant lag and freeze-ups, and have to regularly reboot it to get it to work properly. That is when it doesn't occasionally reboot itself after crashing. I have a Shield in my living room which is fantastic, but is a little over-featured for my office, where I just want to watch some Twitch and YouTube. I could get by with my Xfinity service for YouTube, but they don't have a Twitch app. So I'll have to sort through some of the cheaper offerings to find a replacement for my Fire, which is decidedly not fire.

I have the 4K stick and the network board keeps dropping the wifi constantly. The wifi is in another room and too far to use a Ethernet adapter. I returned it twice thinking it was defective and as it turns out, the network board is mass produced as defective, a piece of crap.

So I got me a Roku and have had zero problems with it since then.

So many have said, I find it difficult to believe. If it was two or three books I might chance it. But I'm not going to read seven long novels to prove it one way or the other.

I wish it had been around when I was a kid, I would have loved it; but the first few novels in the HP series are definitely written for children, with children's perspectives. It matures a little by the end, but not enough to break out of YA. Which is apparently how you become a billionaire, but still, try to challenge people a little bit.

Still, it's an enjoyable popcorn style read. Just go read some adult literature afterwards.

The Fire stick's biggest issue is weak wireless. I stuck the $15 ethernet adapter on my wife's 4k fire, and it was like a whole new device. Still no match for my Shield, though.

I have the ethernet adaptor, so that's not it. The Shield really is stellar, it's just severe overkill for my needs.

You don't have to read all seven. Just read the first one. It's pretty short. If you like it continue, if not don't.

I like my Roku box. Its search for content across all the supported channels/apps is extremely useful.
I also got it for my mom and grandma and helped them cut the cord by using my subscription to SlingTV.

However, lack of working TwitchTV stream is a disappointment. :/ All the 3rd party twitch apps no longer work either.
Luckily my Vizio TV has chromecast builtin, so I can still fall back on that if I'm really in the mood for that.

I used to like my Roku too, but it no longer has a functioning Twitch app as far as I could tell. Does anyone know of one?

Roku 4 lyfe

To me, it's an infinitely better UI than Fire.

I don't disagree with that point, but at the time I was "cutting the cord" from cable tv, Amazon had a sale on their newest Fire Stick that only got better the more you bought. I basically outfitted all three TVs for about the cost of one non-sale priced new-gen Roku. The Fires have all the apps my household wants and they have worked great for me provided their signal was strong so I haven't had a reason to change anything.

So yeah, 100% influenced by the price point (and Prime membership) at the time since all the devices seem so similar on paper when you are shopping for them.

My first thought was The Stand.
I have read the uncut edition of "The Stand". I'd like to read "A Song of Ice and Fire" but I refuse to start it until Martin finishes it. Which at this point is looking less and less likely he ever will. There are a couple of others on that list which I might/should read, but don't hold your breath -- "Atlas Shrugged" and "War and Peace". However, I'll take a pass on Harry Potter and Michener...

Wow, that parasite is amazing. Evolution is amazing.

Those butterflies are amazing to see. Even more amazing they travel so far. Whilst it was good they covered the top of the props they need to cover the bottom too. At 2:22 you can see where one of them lands underneath it and his leg was - possibly - damaged by the prop.
