Diablo II Remastered Rumors Resurface

A post on ACTUGAMING reports, in the site's native French, on plans for a remastered version of Diablo II (thanks Wccftech). A rumor about a Diablo II remake emerged last year, and this report claims to have learned of this from sources close to Blizzard. Here is a machine translation to part of their report:
Among the many projects to come, we would therefore have a remastered edition of the second episode of the hack'n'slash series which would take the name of Diablo 2 Resurrected . The release is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2020 , although the date may be slightly delayed due to the current situation.

It is the desire to introduce the series to the approach of Diablo 4 that would have prompted the Californian company to offer a remastered edition. According to our sources, it is the Vicarious Visions studio that would support Blizzard for this Diablo 2 Resurrected , project on which he would work since the release of the Crash Bandicoot trilogy . Remember that Vicarious also worked on the port of Destiny 2 .

Thanks, but no thanks David. No one wants a turn based Diablo right now (and I am like Mr. Turn Based...) or another Hellgate London. We get it, Diablo was your high school football and you were the homecoming king, but the time has come to let it go. Make a good game on your own or pipe down.

There is a turn-based 'Diablo' clone out right now. It looked like all paper-craft on a 3/4 isometric view with a 'card item' mechanic, and I played through the demo, and when I finished, first thing I thought was '... That was Diablo. wat.'

It's called 'Book of Demons', and its listed as a 'Diablo Tribute'. It was a very odd mental sensation when that realization popped. It was fun, though, and as simple as it looks, it looks good.

Just in case Blizzard decides to lawyer it up, definitely going to download the mod and put it somewhere until Grim Dawn and its expansions are on sale.

Good idea, though there's also a torrent with enough peers to download faster than the remaining direct link was going for me (Google Drive link is disabled for excess traffic), so the mod ain't going anywhere.

Thanks for the info all. I love how this Diablo thread became all about Grim Dawn and its mod. Again, I'll just point people to my sig. Blizzard is blowing a major opportunity, again.

Slightly offtopic, but if you like Grim Dawn, I highly recommend picking up the expansions, at least the next time they are on sale. They add a ton of content to the game, in terms of levels, new creatures (obviously) and new items/augments etc. Also two new game modes if you're sick of the campaign, that are somewhat randomized.

Disclaimer: I do have like 750 + hours in Grim Dawn, and like 15 characters at least. I keep finding new purples to base a build around.

Yeah I can see that happening with the initial weapons and the drop rates of anything better is super low. I had to buy some blue gear from the blacksmith in order to really get going since the drops were all just regular stuff that feels really weak. The balance is definitely against the player in the beginning compared to D2LOD. With the Amazon melee felt much weaker than ranged. I don't usually play pure melee characters so once I noticed that I was just keeping away as much as possible so it felt pretty much the same as what I played in D2LOD.

Yeah I bought the expansions separately during sales last year so I paid around $28 for both. I still haven't even gotten to either as I have never finished the main GD game but now I feel glad I got them ;). I was replaying D2LOD but the upscaling of 800x600 to my 1600p display was terrible looking so I might just try going farther with this mod.

Still I'd just grab the mod for now (especially if you liked D2) even if I couldn't play it at the moment due to what I mentioned earlier. It's not a perfect D2LOD clone mod, but it really does kind of feel like a D2 remaster. I played till I got past Andariel before I stopped last night. And overall the only thing strange was it was a bit too dark especially in the caves. They did a good job on the skill trees and tried to fit them to GD's system so some skills I noticed that in D2 had multiple prerequisites had only 1, but they were all present (for Amazon class anyway). Bow skills don't require arrows to be picked up for ammo. There is no durability in the weapons, so thrown weapons like Javelins are infinite. The health system works as GD's, so you recover health after fights.

How is it?

What he said, it's remarkably like playing Diablo 2. A lot of areas feel like 3D versions of the originals, but some are updated to look and feel more like they should (like the Black Marsh is actually a marsh now). It's a pretty uncanny effort.

It's actually quite impressive. I just played Diablo 2 LOD a couple of weeks ago and it plays like it and really reminds me of the original. They ripped out the voice overs, some graphics, the quests and story line right out of the old D2LOD game and used it.

I am not actually sure how this mod is okay with Blizzard. Maybe blizzard don't know about it yet. I could see if they didn't include the assets like the voices, quests and the graphics like the character graphics to choose your class, or maybe made a program that ripped the assets out of your Diablo2LOD files on a user's HDD, but with those included in the mod I'd expect this to get a DMCA take down letter sooner or later. So grab it while you can.

I just uninstalled WC3 Reforged today, lol.

This coming from one of the biggest WC3 fans back in it's original days. I suppose nostalgia does sell and that's probably why I bought WC3 Reforged. I knew I wasn't going to get back into at the same level and depth I put in to the original. I just was hoping to revisit the charm that made the original so amazing for me.

I don't think it should have been so difficult to pull off but Blizz f**ked it up bad. It just felt whack and didn't have anything that made the original so amazing. Then again, that could just be due to the times have changed. When WC3 came out, it was defining for it's time. The hero based RTS was mastered with WC3. Since then we've had copy cats and the genre saturated.

I think the same will go with Diablo 2. With so much that has come out since, Diablo 2 remastered just might feel old anyway and not have that nostalgic 2000 feeling.
