Out of the Blue

It is with great joy that I announce the completion of the Blue's News responsive redesign and the launch of the ad-free version of the site for our supporters. Though conversion of the news pages was done a while ago, the responsive forums were a temporary fix, and they are now properly mobile-friendly as well. Please join me in thanking Kxmode and Frans for all the hard work they put into this project, as it took a lot more time and effort than you might imagine to drag our 20+ year old code into the present. The entire site including the forums should now properly scale to any mobile device. Whether you visit the forums with your desktop or mobile you'll also notice some visual improvements and changes, including the use of new icons for some functions that I think turned out great. Frans made this forum post with complete patch notes and other information about what's new and different.

As I say, this also marks the launch of the promised ad-free version of the site for our backers. Ads are now off by default for supporters, though you can opt to turn them back on through your user settings. As Frans explains in his post about the news, we are carefully monitoring the impact of this on the server. There's a chance ads will have to resume for all on the main page if the load is too much, but so far this has not been a problem. We have plans to upgrade the server hardware fairly soon, so if we're forced to revert the ad-free code it will return on the new server. These changes also mark the end of founder's program, which will conclude tomorrow, so if you want to have the coveted founder's status as part of your profile or have been waiting for supporters to receive native ad-free viewing, now's the time jump in and become a backer. To all of you who do back the site, here is another huge thank you, especially considering these tough times. Ad revenue has fallen off a cliff lately, so your contributions are more vital than ever to help keep the lights on here.

I really love the re-design both on desktop and mobile. The new unread post marker is much easier to see at a glance and you preserved all of the functionality that matters. The new CSS for the navigation is clean and simple. You guys really did a great job.

Thanks so much for all of your hard work Frans and Kxmode.

As a curmudgeon I generally consider change bad by default. That said, most of the little changes while triggering my "change is bad" reaction are changes I'm sure I can get used to. However as I mentioned in a previous post, I'd really like to see an option to remove the lines between topics. It sticks out to me as the worst of the small changes.

Blue,
Thanks for all you and your team's work!
I'm opting to keep the ads on for now. They haven't been super intrusive in general, and sometimes they are even relevant to my interests.

Personally in my ideal world, I'd turn ads off and occasionally go to a dedicated bluesnews page full of all possible ads where I could see if there's anything interesting or relevant at that moment. Like my favorite board game site used to do that, and I could see all the board game and kickstarter ads all in one place.

They already use Bootstrap's small buttons (class btn-sm), and I'm sure you wouldn't like regular or large ones. But yeah, I think we can tweak that.

Actually in the topics is great. Very easy via mobile. Looks weird, because different, but functions very nicely. And super quick.

Whatever works for you and Blue and the site! I haven't checked it on Mobile cause I do 99% of my Blues'ing on the computer.

As others have said, thank you to everyone involved for this site.

Great job guys. I think the only thing that sits weird with me (and this is a super minor nitpick), is the blue border around usernames on posts... It looks odd to me for some reason, as opposed to just having the name off to the top right.

(Also, I'm assuming the static front page got turned back by the time I read this, since I'm getting ads on the front page.)

No, nothing is reverted... the server is holding up quite nicely. That should not happen. Are you sure you were logged in when you saw an ad?

I was. I just checked again, on the desktop, there are two side ads (one top and bottom of the "I support blues news" image), one banner ad at the top and one below the left sidebar content).

on my phone there's an ad in the middle of the news stories, and theres one of those pop-over ad banners at the bottom of the screen.

If you can get static ad impressions that don't track and it makes you money I'd be happy to do it. I just categorically refuse to view tracking ads. If an advertiser wants to pitch his product online I have zero problem with that. Insisting that he's able to track and know all my habits is completely unacceptable.

That animated Chicago thing is well worth the watch.

And that article on the future of American cities is an interesting read.

Hmm, Blue, Kxmode and I like it a lot (and we invested quite some effort to make it work), so I'm afraid you're currently outvoted.

Thanks, Kxmode and Frans for all the work put in to the redesign - and for all the work done behind the scenes over the years that I've been mostly lurking / visiting and sometimes posting.

No, all tiers should be able to go ad-free.

Can both of you check for the bluesnews.com cookie 'auto-login' in your browser? It should have email:password, without this you'll get the regular frontpage. Try logging out and in?
