That is a decent amount of BTUs for the small size. If you have an IR camera, give it a look at see how uniform the surface temperature is. Probably not very with poor airflow control from cheap grills. They are really fun (IR cameras, and can be gotten to work with a phone for reasonably cheap)!
I personally have never had a gas grill that I bought over the years get over 550 out of the box. The lava rocks have helped some as it retains heat.
