Out of the Blue

It is with great joy that I announce the re-establishment of the sovereign state of Manstovia. We had to re-home my beloved charcoal grill when we moved, as our new homeowner's association doesn't allow them. So yesterday we picked up my first-ever propane model. It's a small four-burner jobbie, but this is appropriate to our deck and needs. Despite the modest size, we were surprised to find it would not actually fit in our car, so we had to remove it from the box to get it home, but thankfully this worked out. It gets very positive reviews despite being surprisingly inexpensive, and it was on-sale for 37% off, so it felt like a steal. The biggest concern from the reviews were repeated complaints of hard to understand instructions and difficult assembly, but those things are in my wheelhouse, so putting it together was a snap. At least until I lost a small cotter pin. But we had to go to Lowe's for a cover anyway, and I found a replacement pin that was far more robust for all of 37 cents. Actually they were two for $0.74, so now I have a spare. The whole process of two store trips and assembly was so time consuming that I didn't actually grill our dinner, so the official Manstovia flag-raising will probably happen today.

You can not believe how sad it makes me that even now we still have people in my general vicinity (in meat-world) that claim this is not worse than a average Flu.. I mean wow... they are educated, one is a doctor in chemistry... I hope I never become this blind when I get older. And one of em even warned me of vaccines.. I mean, WTF? Do they want me to get the virus and then visit them to kill them or what the actual frick...? I can not fathom this kind of behavior, and I see it even more when people get older (60+) but the best thing is at least 2 of the old people in my vicinity actively send me conspiracy theories (unasked!), you know, that Gates/Vaccine spin.. blagh. How do you even respond to that?

Even better, one of my neighbors is a nurse in a pension home... everything these old white men do to make the situation worse directly makes her job even more of a living hell. Blegh.
I would blame Fox News, but you don't have that in Germany, do you? I don't think you magically change into a selfish conspiracy-believing person as you get older. My GPs died when they were 90s, and they were progressive to the end (and both served during WW2, her as a nurse, him on a destroyer).

We do have Fox News but it ain't called that, the scourge of my educated self being "Kopp Verlag" a fake-news bullshit smithy of the highest order as well as popular youtubers like Ken.FM who spread fake news about this virus and give these conspiracy nutjobs a platform to millions. It doesn't help we have literally right and left wing nutjobs out on the streets protesting against these measures.

As I said, I can not fathom how people can behave this way in a global crisis. I had someone approach me today, on the street! while I was wearing a mask asking why I am wearing a mask and whether I believe all those fake news.. he meant the news about the virus being real mind you.... he wanted to convince me it was all just a conspiracy by the vaccine industry.. I mean.. is there some agency where I can call to put these kind of people in an asylum or something? I am at my wits end how to handle this.... I am apr. 41% there to responding to this aggressively but I know these people... I have seen them for nearly 2 decades now... I would have never imagined they are... I don't know how to call this.. ignorant? Conspiracy influenced? Incompetent in handling modern media?

Stand your ground has always been the law of the land in Manstovia. Approach the grill at your own risk. No firearms required though. The serrated edge on my spatula makes for a most frightning medieval-style melee weapon.

Interesting. I've never dealt with propane. I'm guessing the same is true for the large tanks used to supply homes outside the city utility zone,

I've got a good propane story...

Back in the early eighties I was working swing-shift as a pipefitter apprentice on a nuclear reactor construction site (in the Hanford area, Washington State). One day my foreman tells me that I'd been "volunteered" to be on the fire brigade, or fire watch, or whatever it was called, which basically meant I would have to go to a meeting every month and show up to help fight any fires that occurred (which, up to that point had never happened). Of course within a few days, and before I'd been to a single meeting, a medium size pole building that was being used as a shop for the insulators or painters was on fire and all fire brigade members were called out to fight the fire. So I mosey on out in the dark, not knowing where to go, what to do, or for that matter, any of the other people I'm supposed to be meeting with. Turns out it's not hard to find a burning building at night.

Once I got there the building was burning pretty good and there were a bunch of guys inside on a hose trying to put the thing out. Most of the people outside were yelling to get those guys out of there and I agreed completely especially since the roof had caught fire. But you'd think those guys were putting out their own house because they weren't giving up. Then, suddenly, WHOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSHHHHHH - followed by a chorus of "HOLY SHIT"! Right next to the building a column of flame shoots out of the ground at least 30 feet high and night turns to day. It turns out that there was a big propane tank buried in the ground next to the building and the pop-off valve had finally let go.

That got those guys out of the building.

Did it come with a tank gauge? I got a Weber Spirit II - in Ivory which looks quite nice - and it's a good little grill but didn't come with a tank gauge, which is pretty cheap on Weber's part. Need to pick one up. They're $20 on Amazon.

That's a good tip. Though since it seems like the ultimate nightmare of gas grilling is running out of gas, so I was thinking I'd eventually pick up a spare tank.

I'm not so sure how well these tank gauges work - that is if we're talking about the in-line pressure type gauges. I quit using mine because it seemed like as soon as I noticed that the gauge wasn't in the green, the tank was a few minutes away from quitting. I don't definitely know how this works, and I'm too lazy to look it up, but I don't think a tank's pressure changes much as it empties. If it did, you'd constantly have to adjust where you set the regulator valves as the tank goes down.

That being said, they do work if you catch them at the right time. Like if you see it in the yellow after you're done cooking you'll know to fill the tank before using it again. But, if it goes yellow in the middle of cooking something you may end up finishing up in your oven. That why, like you said, having a spare tank is the way to go.

Edit: Okay, I looked it up... https://www.hunker.com/12000128/why-propane-tanks-do-not-have-pressure-gauges

Well it's a condo with rows of connected townhouses, so I think they don't want the danger of a fire. Though there was a fire recently that demonstrated that the firewall between units are effective. The end unit looks like a total loss while the one next to it is pretty unscathed.
