Google Stadia Gets Free Tier

A post from a couple of weeks ago on the Stadia Community Blog follows up on the previous news about a two month free trial of Stadia Pro. In this Google says they are moving away from the Stadia Base name but they are now making that basic level of service free and open to everyone in supported markets for their streaming game service. This is in line with an announcement they made in February that such a move was in the works. GamesIndustry.biz has a clarification from Google that this means that "users who let subscriptions lapse will still be able to purchase new games for Stadia, play them, and will have their resolution capped at 1080p as originally stated for Stadia Base -- with Pro subscribers able to play games in 4k." Here's word:
Last week, Stadia opened up access to Stadia to everyone in our 14 launch countries. Some of you may be wondering if this is Stadia Base. While we've decided to move away from that name, we're very excited that Stadia is now free and open to everyone who wants to create an account in our supported markets.

We’re also making a number of games available for free during a 2 month Stadia Pro trial. We’ve got all the details below.

Try Stadia Pro free for two months and get free games

Many of us are spending more time at home. Games can help us connect with friends and explore other worlds. So we’re giving you two months of free games you can claim and play with Stadia Pro at no cost. Go to stadia.com/pro, sign up for a trial, and you can start playing on your laptop, desktop, or compatible phone or tablet. If you have a Stadia Controller and a Google Chromecast Ultra, you can play on your TV as well. Find out more here.

If you’re already a Stadia Pro subscriber, we won’t charge you for your Stadia Pro subscription for the next two months. The free two months will be applied automatically, so you don’t have to do anything to redeem.

Stadia and Google get a lot of irrational hate around here but I like it and I've been a pro user since the beginning. No, it doesn't match the user experience of a high end pc. But it's still impressive.

The negative reaction is similar to the Epic Games Store. People feel threatened and don’t want anything to disrupt the status quo. But they’ll adjust over time.

I have no idea if Stadia will make it or not long term but game streaming is here to stay. If you want to see the potential, setup Steam Link to a 4K tv and try it. It's pretty amazing.

So basically next to no one is buying into this consumer nightmare, so now they are giving it away to fulfill their publisher dream of making you buy again games you all ready own.

Thanks Bob. There's been alot of negative comments here about Stadia but I picked up Shadow of the Tomb Raider on sale for less than twenty bucks which I can keep after I cancel the trial and I think it runs fine.

What are they even doing? Every part of this "project" is a fail including the name... sounds like some sort cosmetic makeup. Even Amazon is trying to make games and here Google is (with an actual platform) trying to sell a shitty controller to play games everyone already has or will have.

Stadia will work fine with a USB keyboard and mouse on a PC. I believe you need a Stadia controller right now if you want to use a Chromecast Ultra.
