I keep the original StarCraft soundtrack on my phone to listen to at work sometimes.

I don't really remember much about sound design prior to WoW. When that game came out - it was like Brian Eno on steroids and having lot's of ganja around before prohibition came to an end. Magical. That was like 75% of that game in my opinion. Some people turned off the sound so they could play Backstreet Boys or some shit; the same people who are wearing Fortnite shirts these days, lol.

Never heard of a little game called Skyrim? The music, besides being widely loved, was integral in creating such perfect atmospheres.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

I think the more realistic a game is, the less I would want musical accompaniment.
For example
Far Cry 3: no thanks
Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon: yes please (great soundtrack)

At the end of the day, so long as you can turn the music off/on, no harm done.

If it's a "cinematic" type singleplayer game, sure, music is almost always part of the set pieces.

Outside of the last two Dooms, anything without a strong story or pacing structure leads me to do the same, hit up YT and listen to some podcast or LP.

I can't even imagine playing a Ubi-style open world / "timewaster" game with the in-game music...

Sorry but

step 1 - install game
step 2 - turn off music
step 3 - play game
step 4 - play some music/podcast that I want to listen to
