Tabletop Playground Open Beta

A Tabletop Playground Beta is now available on Steam, offering the chance to check out this new installment in this genre pioneered by Tabletop Simulator between now and (at least) May 3rd. This is for Windows, includes VR support, and allows you to play classic tabletop games as well as new ones created by the community. The beta has support for their game editor, and users who upload their own creations will be entered into a drawing for free game codes for the release version. Here's the game's Teaser Trailer and here are more details:
We've received a mass of requests for an open beta in recent weeks, in large part due to so many gamers being stuck at home due to COVID-19. We're excited for more people to check out the game and be able to help out even in a small way, by letting people around the world play tabletop games online together for free, when they need it most.

Players can enjoy a suite of classic games, such as Chess, checkers, cards, etc, and dozens of games already created by our community as part of our closed beta Creator's Program. We've been running the program since the end of last year in collaboration with mod.io, which will be our cross platform modding solution for Tabletop Playground.

We're excited to see how players utilise the in-game editor and the games they create over the next few weeks. Players who do upload any creations during the open beta period, will go in the running for final release codes for the game and their friends!

Says they will be supporting Linux and Macs from the start. Their mod language is designed for the start to be cross compatible.

I'm not sure how this will unseat TableTop Simulator? They already have a entrenched playerbase, workshop support, and massive library of DLC/mods.

The design interface looks light years beyond TTS...but that is something only a tiny percentage of users would ever actually access. Depending on the pricepoint, I might be tempted to pick up a copy just to play around with the design aspect.

TTS being common and functional doesn't mean it's that good. Thus far it has been the only real option, but there is plenty of room for a competitor that... actually competes. Dunno if that's this but it looks promising.

Nevermind, it seems it's windows only. I would bet a lot of the designers who might be tempted to use it use other platforms. So not a real competitor after all.

Maybe Fraggin means that the fun is reliant on community made games and mods which are free and therefore suffer in quality and longevity?

You realize this is a "free" beta, not a "free" game right?

Free doesn't always mean "good quality". They are rare to find if any good quality games are found.

Pay to play usually is the best since it gives the game some financial support and the means to maintain and improve the game over the course of time. It may also help employ more developers to help improve the game as well.
If that is they hire the right quality developers as part of the team.
