Xbox PC App for Windows 10 Preview

Xbox Wire announces the release of the Xbox PC App for Windows 10 to those who join the Windows Gaming Flight. The app is available to the public as a beta, but this will give access to a preview of the full version. Here are the details:
We’re excited to announce the Xbox PC App (Preview) has been added to the Windows Gaming Flight. The Xbox PC App is currently available to the general public in a beta version. But the Xbox Insider Program is offering access to a preview version full of additional improvements!

The Xbox PC App allows you to discover and download new games with Xbox Game Pass, see what your friends are playing, and chat with them across Xbox devices (mobile, PC, and console).

We’re asking Xbox Insiders in the Windows Gaming Flight to check out the Xbox PC App (Preview). Your participation helps us improve the experience for future releases!

Our goals for this preview are to:

  • Provide an optimized experience on Windows 10 with enhanced performance
  • Decrease memory usage
  • Shrink installation packages significantly

If you want to preview the app, you can join the Windows Gaming Flight in the Xbox Insider Hub. From there, you are also eligible for early preview versions of the Windows 10 Game Bar and early versions of the Windows 10 Gaming install services.

Are you currently a member of the Windows Gaming Flight, but you’re not seeing the Xbox PC App (Preview)? Click the Show in store button from within the preview page, and you will be taken straight to the app on the Windows Store page!

Yeah the fact that so many games play poorly on XGP, nor can you mod any of them, doesn't speak well for it's longevity. It still boggles my mind that after all this time MS still doesn't get it.

Modding is hit and miss, it isn't a certainty you can't, I was of your belief and have been proven wrong and I was surprised.

I tried to mod Kingdom CD and couldn't. Even doing all the steps to turn off the protected folders and stuff. The fact that you even had to deal with that shit to begin with shows MS is still not getting it.

No they get it, the fact you bought an OS that doesn't give you file access rights to the files you paid for means you are basically oblivious. The last 23 years they've been putting drm into everything since they discovered the average blues news goer and gamer was computer illiterate beyond their wildest imagination.

The fact that steam, mmo's and always online drm exist, mean's they get it just fine. They've won the battle.

League of legends and dota 2 are fully client server games that companies now outright own and control, they no longer have to give us local applications at all. The whole point of moving to "games as a service" is to kill off local file access.

UWP/Microsoft store and the new windows 10 OS that requires internet connection should have been a big tip off that these companies are locking down your PC and getting away with it because the average gamer and computer consumer is a moron.
So what's the alternative? Consoles? Linux? You complain a lot, but never discuss what the alternatives are.

If I have to ask WTF a "Microsoft Gaming Flight" is, does that mean this isn't for me? Does this have anything to do with the MS flight sim, or is that Microsoft again pulling weird terminology out of their corporate ass to describe something like some sort of beta access level?

Seems to be a term for software testing. I've seen it used to discuss Halo testing.

Soooo in short this is just a new patch of the existing Xbox PC app that has been out since well before Game Pass? Because that is what this sounds like.

Yes, it's a beta version basically.

I don't really have any issues with the app. I use it to install XGP games and then load the games using GOG Galaxy 2.0. They need to do more with it to make it feature competitive with Steam but so does...everyone else.

I'm not a fan of UWP packed games but hopefully they are on their way out with Microsoft moving more stuff to other platforms.

The Windows Gaming flight ring gives you access to specific betas and other tests, based on the current Windows build you're running.

That's my feeling. Apparently this is just a new crappy app to replace and even crappier app to play certain MS Windows games.

So, this is games for Windows Live 2.0?

Well I'm gonna buck the trend and say I've been using the XBox Beta app to play various games (on Game Pass) for the last 6 months and...it's been fine. I pick to to download, it downloads and it works.

Not sure what else is needed, TBH. Layout could be better, but whatever. I just need it to be able to download and launch games, which it does.

Performance of the Xbox app is abysmal, but that's not a big deal compared to the pain of dealing with the storefront itself, or worse, installing and trying to use a game delivered via the Microsoft Store (mods or launching via steam are both a mess, and controllers don't work via steam link).

The Xbox Game Pass is a pretty good deal, but I dislike the whole experience so much that at this point I'd rather just buy my games elsewhere.
