XCOM: Chimera Squad Announced; Coming Next Week

2K Games announces XCOM: Chimera Squad, saying an all-new new installment in the XCOM turn-based strategy series is coming on April 24th. Here's a Game Reveal Trailer and here's a Gameplay Overview Trailer. Read on for the announcement:
Welcome to City 31, the epicenter of XCOM: Chimera Squad -- a new game set in the XCOM universe.

Five years after the events of XCOM 2, humanity has driven back the Overlords and reclaimed Earth. Now humans and former alien soldiers work and live together as they strive to forge a civilization of cooperation and coexistence.

City 31, the setting for XCOM: Chimera Squad, has become a model of peace in the post-invasion world; however, not all who dwell here support interspecies alliance. Enter Chimera Squad, an elite force of human and alien agents who must work together to identify and thwart the hidden threats that seek to upend this fragile peace in City 31.

Each agent in Chimera Squad has their own story, unique set of skills and motivations driving them, all of which you’ll learn in XCOM: Chimera Squad as you uncover conspiracies, breach enemy strongholds and work to keep City 31 from descending into chaos. The future of City 31 depends on you.

Features:

  • Unique Alien and Human Agents: Each of the 11 agents have their own distinct personality and tactical abilities, including species-specific attacks like the Viper’s tongue pull.
  • Specialized and Complementary Classes: Execute devastating combos by teaming the right agents and utilizing cooperative actions. The difference between mission success and failure can depend wholly on team composition.
  • Re-Envisioned Tactical Combat: Missions are structured as a series of discrete, explosive encounters, keeping the action intense and unpredictable.
  • Breach Mode: Shape the battlefield to your advantage with a new combat phase that injects your squad right into action. Strategically assign your agents to different entry points and coordinate their assault with a range of Breach-specific skills.
  • Interleaved Turns: An automatic initiative system slots individual agents and enemies into an alternating turn order, creating new strategic possibilities based on what unit is queued to act next—and what unit is at the greatest risk when they do.
  • Suspenseful Strategy Layer: Outside of combat, manage the operations of a high-tech HQ, where you must prioritize competing tasks, investigations, and agent assignments in the face of a ticking clock: the constantly rising unrest in the city’s various districts, driving City 31 closer and closer to total anarchy.

Uh what? There is a gameplay trailer. And its $10, I can't imagine a more no brainer purchase if you're at all into these kinds of games.

Pretty funny idea. Like "hmm, what if the Greys are on your team!" And there you have it.

There's a gameplay trailer right below the CGI trailer, ffs.
Yeah lol.
I suspect the CGI intro was done in that fashion to save money. Plus the overall scale and length of the game. Which I'm not at all opposed to, since they actually passed the savings onto the end user! Instead of trying to get $60 out of people for this. Like I bet they could start doing episodes of this.

Actually, makes me wonder if groups of the team that was working on xcom3 finished their work on xcom3 and wanted to make something like this since their next project wasn't ready yet.

It also takes place after 2, so it, at least to me, felt like it was a nice fit as humans come to grips with all the alien footsoldiers that were left behind; I also like that its a nice dose of xcom to tide us over until 3 is released.

I made the mistake of looking at the steam forums for this title, since I have enjoyed virtually all X-com games since Enemy Unknown (3 and interceptor being the exception and TFTD was a bit ehhh without mods); the vitriol being spewed about this game is bizarre, and I will not make that mistake again. Also threw 10 bucks since hey, its Xcom and I actually like the art style.

That's really annoying. This is clearly not called XCOM3 for a reason. It's trying to be something different, with different gameplay, to scratch the itch while a larger XCOM3 comes.

This is NOT the XCOM main story. It is a side story. XCOM main story around the whole planet Earth. This game's story is about a single city - City 31. The characters here are more like a city police (SWAT) force than an UN military force.

Yes, thank you, captain obvious. As I said, it's clearly NOT called XCOM 3 for a reason.

I planned to wait to buy it during this current sale until some reviews came in, but this is a pre-purchase deal that ends May 1st, but the game releases April 24th. I'm confused.

This looks like a mod for XCOM 2. Don't really like the changes, especially since it looks like you have a limit pool of agents and a mission fails if one of them dies. But its worth a shot for $10.

Who am I kidding, I even bought X-com Enforcer and there's no way this will be as bad as that game.

My big complaint with team vs character turns is that if enemies get the drop on you, sometimes it can feel like a cheesy way to lose.

I'm sure the balance is tight.
The lead developer of XCOM and XCOM2 has said he was against this, but now thinks its best. I'm guessing it will be in XCOM3. It makes sense - it was too easy to bullrush through a lot of fights in the last two.

At the same time, it will make everything take longer. When you kill an entire pod before it has time to fire a shot, fights are quick. I like quick fights.

Released April 23rd and will be on sale at $10 for a week after that. Plenty of time to look at a few Let's Plays and reviews and see if there is a long enough campaign included. To me it looks like a great deal on the surface. Probably going to make it a 'buy-in cheap' now we release chapter DLCs to buy on top of that.
Hopefully XCOM 3 does NOT include the per character turn based system, I prefer team by team turn based for these kind of games.

Ahh thanks for the heads up on pricing. Yeah, I'll buy that for a dollar - $15 actually. Think I'll actually wait to load and play it until I see that's still a good value. Got a sneaking suspicion this might be very short.

Looks interesting; XCOM Cops, somewhere between non-XCOM each character taking turn-based games, and mixed species civilization fiction.

I'll get it; it's priced as basically a short DLC campaign, no reason not to throw down $9.99 for me.

*EDIT* Hopefully XCOM 3 does NOT include the per character turn based system, I prefer team by team turn based for these kind of games.

Sounds good but 2K will probably be charging a premium for this. So it really depends on how much actual gameplay there is.

$10 if you buy before May 1, $20 after. Cheaper than the expansion.

Turn Order sounds interesting.
