New Valve Controller Patent Application

A new international patent application from Valve proposes a swappable button scheme for a handheld controller, suggesting Valve may be planning a new version of their recently discontinued Steam Controller (thanks Tyler McVicker via PCGamesN). Here's the abstract for the patent:
Described herein are, among other things, handheld controllers that include housings having one or more receiver portions for detachably coupling to one or more controls. For example, a housing of one such controller may include, on a front surface of the housing, a receiver that is configured to detachably couple to one or more joysticks, one or more D-pads, one or more track pads, one or more buttons, and/or the like. In some instances, a user may swap a first control for a second control based on a current application (e.g., game title) that the user is playing, based on comfort of the user, and/or for any other reason.

When I got a steam controller I went from using different input devices for every game to using the steam controller for basically everything, outside of some first person shooters (which I rarely play because my TV setup doesn't make mouse+keyboard particularly comfortable).

Since it was discontinued I've been quite nervous that I will break it and not be able to replace it.

So I do hope they come out with an updated version.
I have one bnb (brand new in box) unopened should that ever happen. Seriously doubt I'll ever use it.

Maybe they should call it the "Steam Controller Half-Life Edition" with a tech demo of Half-Life Barney...

So basically this patents what any high price HOTAS has been doing for many years?

You can't go by the abstract, you have to go the actual patent to see the details of how they'll execute what they propose.

Controller was a neat idea, but I wasn't a fan of the layout at all. It felt very foreign, the buttons felt 'off', and while the tactile buttons/pad were an interesting idea, wasn't sure what to make of them. Probably doesn't help I've grown accustomed to the PS style of controller. Xbox ones felt unwieldy, at least to me.

Why don't they try actually making it easy to stream Steam games to TVs?

Steam Link is an app now, instead of a set-top box. Probably won't be getting any easier than that, outside of investing in a 50- or 100-foot HDMI cable.

Yeah, it's Bluetooth, I know the Steam controller had a firmware update to better comply with using it that way. I haven't had an issue with just using an Xbone controller paired directly with the PC when it's just one or two walls and 20-30 feet away, though.

Huh I hadn't realized that. How do input devices work, though? I'm positive my cheap Roku TV doesn't accept bluetooth devices or USB dongles for mice, but I imagine my Firestick might work...

Just picked up an XBox1 controller b/c one of my XB360 controllers is dying. I wanted a Steam controller, but the reviews were just too middling.

Like with many thing Valve does, they need someone to head up their controller development and community outreach. The Steam Controller was a decade before its time and did amazing things that only the latest gen of controllers are even remotely capable of.....but it *felt* cheap....and there wasn't a quick config that just *worked*. You had to play with settings with every game, which became simple after practice, was daunting to new users.

- Functional gyro for granular aiming
- Grip buttons
- Programmable buttons
