Saints Row: The Third Remastered Revealed

A new ESRB listing is now online for Saints Row: The Third Remastered, apparently revealing plans for an updated version of Volition's open-world action/adventure which was originally released in 2011 (thanks Eurogamer). The rating summary does not indicate when this might be released, but does justify the M, Mature 17+ rating it will carry when it is:
This is an open-world action-adventure game in which players assume the role of a criminal syndicate known as the Saints. As players attempt to take over a fictional city and exact revenge on a rival gang, they engage in driving and combat missions to progress the storyline. Players use machine guns, shotguns, swords, rocket launchers, and grenades to kill rival gang members. Players can also attack pedestrians, and in one mission, players shoot at police and civilians to create chaos in a rival gang's territory. One scene prompts players to run over a certain number of pedestrians within a given time; another sequence allows players to dispatch enemies by putting grenades in their mouths. Players can also use chainsaws to hack at enemies, resulting in small chunks of flesh and large splatters of blood. Damage from certain guns can result in decapitation. During the course of the game, female characters are sometimes depicted in outfits that reveal large amounts of their breasts/cleavage or buttocks; characters are occasionally depicted nude, though their nipples and/or genitalia are obscured by blurry pixels. In one sequence, players can walk through an erotic club containing several phallic sex toys and sexual contraptions. Some game environments and dialogue contain drug paraphernalia or other references to drugs (e.g., marijuana leaves and water bongs on a table; a radio DJ telling a caller to try heroin). The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “c*ck” appear in the dialogue.

COD4: MW got one last year, and it was only 10 years old. Especially if it was made for consoles, the remake will look a lot better. Crysis, on the other hand, still looks amazing.

Out of all the Saints Row games that needed a remaster, they should have remade Saints Row 2. IMO, that one still has the most engaging storyline and is in need of a remaster due to how godawful the PC port is.

Was also the hardest one by far.

Which might have been due to how awful the port was I remember replaying missions over and over again with a friend that had you on a motorcycle since it's was so damned hard to control.

SR2 was the game that was great and needed a remaster on Windows the most. I guess that would have needed too much work so they try the easy way to grab some money. Not sure I'll bite unless I read about SR3 looking totally different with all new textures, shades, bells, and whistles.

Agree they should be doing Saints Row 2, but I can understand why they are doing 3. It was the most successful one.

SR2 was very jenky and rough around the edges, so I'd love to see a more polished remaster Maybe if the SR3 one is successful we will.

SR2 didn't have much in the way of silly weaponry, characters or story, about the closest it got to SR3/4 style, was a couple of side missions where you drove around town in a septic truck and sprayed everything to lower property values (while the mission giver was talking with your character). The rest of the game was much closer to GTA3 in presentation, gameplay and story than the sequels ever got.

And as others here have mentioned, SR2 would be a far better Remaster, but I think people who have only played the later games would be confused about the tone of SR2.

I really liked 2 and 3. I would've liked to see a remake of 2 where it doesn't run like crap on PC.

Yep.

So glad I played this though, thanks to Yahtzee's review on Zero Punctuation. I think as of the time of the review it was the only game he'd ever given a positive reaction.

Also looking at screenshots of SR3, yeah, it could use a remaster. Make that game for next-gen consoles and ERG MAH GURD I'd buy it in a heartbeat, throw in 4k assets, HDR, global illumination, quadruple the AI count... drooling already.

In my opinion 4 should never have been made. They should have knocked the Saints back down to almost nothing and made 4 a more traditional Saints Romp.

Once you started throwing superpowers into it for use at any time it just negated so much of the gameplay.

4 was a ton of fun, but your complaint is spot on

3 is one of my favorite games.

I wonder if 4 will get one as well? There's more than a little asset reuse and it's basically the same engine.

Not sure why this game needs a remaster. I played both 3 and 4 from a steam sale not long ago and it didn't feel particularly dated. Maybe it's just a marketing gimmick to sell more copies.
