Terraria Sells 30 Million

A post on Steam announces that Terraria has now sold more than 30 million copies across all platforms (thanks GameSpot via Neutronbeam). This is an amazing milestone for any game, much less an indie action/adventure. They celebrate the news with a 50% off sale between now and April 3rd on Steam for the Windows, macOS, and Linux edition, which will probably help them move even more copies. Here's part of the post from Re-Logic breaking down sales by platform and expressing their gratitude:
Some fun details:

  • 14 Million sold on PC
  • 7.6 Million sold on Consoles
  • 8.7 Million sold on Mobile devices

What is even more crazy is that the momentum behind our game remains as strong as it has ever been - even in advance of Journey's End arriving soon, which is sure to blow the lid off once again!

To say that this floors all of us in regards to the sheer level of support and love you have shown us over the years is a massive understatement. We can only hope to return the favor by continuing to provide amazing gaming experiences for years to come (whether it be on Terraria or future games that we create).

1.4 is coming out, big changes, more NPCs, more bosses, more biomes. We are pretty pumped in this house. Was hoping it would be soon.

There was a guy who posted a 2,500ish hour negative review on one of the f2p mmos on steam the other day. I was flipping through my cue and I noticed it, chuckled and moved on. I didn't read it because the game totally didn't seem interesting...forget the title. I just remember seeing the 2500+ hours played and a red downward thumb and I was like...WTF....

I saw something similar a few years ago. I asked the guy about it, and he said over the years he loved it, but a recent update killed a bunch of stuff and basically ruined the game for him. Could be something similar with the one you saw.

Yeah, DDO used to have all of their characters available in free-to-play. Then a bunch of them were put behind the paywall.

You kid, but I've seen negative reviews in some games with 750 hours played. It's ridiculous.

I've tried to like Terraria but I can't get over the 2D side scrolling and how it turns into almost like a shootemup with the combat. I skipped the 8 and 16 bit generations of consoles and just haven't been able to adapt.

I've also always wanted to get into Spelunky but haven't been able to for the same reason.

I took a look at Starbound when it came out. It seemed like a natural after having played Minecraft and Terraria but it just didn't grab me. I might give it a whirl someday...

Terraria is so good! I got hooked playing it with my nephew and poured hundreds of hours in.

Very sad that their efforts to make sequels didnt pan out.. yet.

Starbound was ok. But didn't have quite the allure Terraria did.

I find exploration in Terraria to be quite fun, but earlier versions of the game had less interesting caves. Things opened up a lot once we got underground mine tracks.

Bad RNG can might influence your experience. If you start in a world without easy access to deep caves then it can be kindof a pain to dig deep enough to find interesting encounters.

The jungle area is probably the easiest area to explore without a lot of digging, but at the same time it's also too difficult for newbies without upgraded gear.

I bought Minecraft during the beta in 2010. I have at least 1000 hours in it over the years both on PC and on mobile. In fact, just bought a new phone and started a new world on it. I bought Terraria in 2012. I've started a dozen games over the years, and never got past the first hour. Not sure why it doesn't grab me.

Definitely a great game. Between Terraria and Minecraft there are pros and cons for each. Despite many similarities I wouldn't be surprised if many people like one but not the other. However, I like them both. I'll definitely fire Terraria up again for the Jouney's End release.

Count me. I really enjoy exploration in Minecraft. Truthfully, I've probably barely scratched the surface - only built a livestock farm once, but I really enjoy exploring. Until I don't, which is usually when I end up very far from home and totally lost. I play it once every few years, and probably do 10 hours each time.

I only did about 10 minutes of Terraria. Something was missing for me. Maybe I should go back, but just think it isn't my type of game.

If you want more than Terraria, Starbound is a great next step. Go to different planets and solar systems in the same vein as Terraria. Have a mothership/homebase, etc. It will be what we play next.

I actually prefer Starbound to Terraria, but it is a bit advanced right now as there is a lot of reading for a 6 yo. We will try it next week.

/as I type this, my son is farming truffle worms. In a short time got 10. He said he is doing it so he can farm Duke Fishron for me and get the wings. Hilarious.

//Hoping they add crossplay so XBOX can join PC servers.

Not surprising at all. Bought two copies so my family could play together, and now that my 5yo is getting into it (dies a lot though!) we could probably use a 3rd copy.
