Star Citizen Raises More Cash

Cloud Imperium Raises announces they've raised an additional $17.25 million dollars for Star Citizen in addition to the king's ransom the space game project has already raised through crowdfunding and previous private investments. Kotaku Australia does the math to calculate this means the project has now raised a total of about US$338.25 million. Here's more on this new influx of capital:
Today, Cloud Imperium announced that existing investors – the Calder Family Office, Snoot Entertainment, and ITG Investment – have exercised a one-time option to purchase further shares in the company. The share prices reflect a discounted option price for existing shareholders that was pre-negotiated at the time of the initial investment in 2018. There were no changes to the Board composition as a result of this transaction. Chris Roberts continues to maintain full control of the Board and Group.

Development on one part of a game doesn't halt just because others aren't ready yet. Do you realize how inefficient it would be if animators couldn't do ANY work at all until programmers fixed all the major bugs?

The gameplay in the current Star Citizen pre-alpha PTU is just so lacking …. how anyone can think that they understand and know how to make a compelling game is beyond me.

Chris can use other peoples money to make all the pretty graphics he likes, what he cant do is make any form of fun gameplay, he has no understanding of modern gaming.

He does not care though, he was just in this to make himself some money.

I guess this should take just another few years and another $30,000,000 donations to be implemented properly... into the pre-alpha. Hahaha_no

You missed a zero in your donation number there: $300,000,000

This is an ironic statement for most of the people in this thread when if you do more than a little looking you can clearly see that they ARE working on the game and getting a lot done, and you CAN play the latest version.

But "Hurrdurr Chris is a fraud amirite?" And "Wow whales are dumb guys." (Despite the fact that these are investors in the article, not random people throwing money around)

I frequently see people here calling regular ineptitude fraud. Hell, it's pretty common on kickstarter, too.

Fraud is when someone says they'll build something, but instead buys themselves a new car.

Ineptitude is when someone says they'll build something, and tries to build it, but ends up spending all the money without managing to get an actual product out.

I wholeheartedly agree. Chris never set out to purposely scam people. But it does demonstrate a repeating pattern of behavior that stretches as far back as Anvil Studios. Microsoft bought the studio to wrangle control of Freelancer away from Roberts so that the studio could focus on releasing it. Chris's big vision projects aren't economically feasible, and no one at CIG has the authority to push-back against Chris. Worse, the fans have exacerbated the problems by giving Chris a blank check and unlimited time to keep doing what he's doing. At some point, Chris is going to need to rip off the bandage and finish the game.

Chris is either the most inept leader in decades, a genius making the perfect game, or shady.

I have no clue which, and don't think anyone has enough information to say one way or the other. All I know is, even if this was my genre, he'd be getting no money from me.

But I can't say he's a fraud. Equally likely he's just mismanaging this terribly.

I don't understand how this game is still in development. This is an even bigger troll than Duke Nukem Forever. By the time Star Citizen comes out, no one will even care... (maybe cause they already sold all the copies to us suckers)

As far as star citizen...

Isn't 330 million enough to pay everyone's salaries for many years? why do they need more money?

I think people just want to be involved in this as it makes them feel self important.

I disagree that its a problem of scope. It's a problem of honesty.

Chris Roberts lies. He lies all the time. He lies to himself about what he is capable of achieving. He lies to the backers about how long things will take.

He's a liar. And he has used lies to get money again and again.

What a totally waste of $338,000,000. He should be ashamed. Maybe that's why he's not around anymore and is not in any of the recent media from CIG.

He lied to get all those funds so that he would not need any investments from outside and now he accepted over $60,000,000 from outside!

That much money and all he is producing is shit.

What an inept, scum of a man.

They're writing the game. There's no pretending. The problem is one of scope: it's simply not achievable. Taking time to model ice cube physics or do real-time facial capture and display it on your avatar is shit no one cares about. Put that in your DLC after you've solidified the base game.

Say what you will about E:D, but that's the right way to do it, IMO.
