More About Playing Half-Life Alyx Without VR

A new video from the Valve News Network follows up on the brief clip from the other day showing Half-Life: Alyx played on a flat monitor without VR. In this we learn the details on how this was done. The good news is that it didn't involve any external modding, but the bad news is that it utilized a test version of the game that's no longer available anywhere to the public. It also explains why a non-VR mod for the game will be a novelty, but ultimately will not be fun to play.

Worthabuys gameplay video to me really highlights how immersive VR must be. I love the way he opens a door with one hand while gingerly sticking his pistol through with the other.

/The end of the video made me genuinely smile for the first time in a over a week.
So I started watching and when he didn't know the name of the manhacks at the beginning I was a little perturbed. But I stuck through till the end and you were right.

Stupid question; what is the inventory management. The continual grenade juggling looked annoying and awkward.

You get two spots for items, one on each wrist. Grenades are SUPPOSED to be hard to come by, and you have to choose if you're going to take a self-healing syringe or a grenade for each. They do that so that when you're reloading, which is done by reaching back over your shoulder (into your backpack), you'll only pull out the ammo for THAT gun.
Ammo inventory is done by dropping clips over your shoulder into your backpack. Alyx will say out loud when she's low on clips (take one out, she'll say "only three left" or "last one!").
thanks!

Just finished the game, took about 14 hours, and I missed some stuff even though I THOUGHT I was quite thorough.

Valve never, EVER said "We guarantee our games will never need advanced equipment to play". In fact, Half life 1 and 2 required hefty rigs when they came out, I don't see what the difference is here. Their goal with each HL game was to push gaming forward, and Alyx is no different.

If you don't want to get a VR kit, go watch someone else play it on YouTube. It'll be a far more authentic experience of the game than if you played a hacked together, absolutely feature-devoid version of it.

That's the thing about all the complaints about VR. People forget that back in 1998 you either had to buy a 3D card or run the game in shitty software rendering mode. Unreal did this too. Then Half-Life 2 was 3D card only. People whined back then about having to buy a 3D card, so expensive, blah blah blah. Then games started coming out with NO SOFTWARE MODE! OMGZ! RAGE! Forcing us to buy 3D card! rawr!

It's the same with people who bought games on PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, 360 and then had to upgrade to the new console to play the sequels.

People are still angry about this being in VR, huh? Lol.

I like horror games like the Frictional Games sort of stuff. They get me tense, for sure. But in HL:A - even though it's atmosphere is not nearly as daunting as say Penumbra, or Amnesia - seeing a headcrab unexpectedly flying through the air at my head in VR gives me the chills. But, damn - the weapons feel so solid, that shotgun just wreaks immediate havoc.

I mean here's one cool thing the anti-VR people aren't going to realize or perceive. Looking down the really cool 3D laser sights on the handgun... And that is just a little sliver of the cool things that cannot be conveyed without actually giving it a shot in VR.

If you preordered Ep 3, and they kept the money and never refunded nor delivered it...

THAT is a scam. This was not.
A shame, a disappointment, a blatant case of mismanagement (where they couldn't control their feature creep), certainly. People wanted to play the final chapter. They weren't demanding some brand-new genre-busting tech for it.

Where's the outcry for not making the final film in the Divergent series? Isn't that a scam for everyone who paid to see the earlier films and didn't get their finale? That were forced to READ the books to see how it ended?
George Raymond Richard Martin is a scammer.

Cool video, but I'm disappointed to see the physics haven't evolved much... Using any old object as a projectile was a core mechanic in HL2, so why can't whacking an enemy with anything you can pick up hurt them now?

Some sheep's fall for it , but the scam ya made with the ep of half life 2 stays .

I do not think you know what a scam is. Please, enlighten us on how he conned you into giving him your money.
I wonder if people here think TV shows that only last a few episodes, or a single season, are a scam. "They canceled My Mother the Car, what a scam!"

a non-VR mod for the game will be a novelty, but ultimately will not be fun to play.
i wonder how many vr-less mopes have bought the game and are baffled by what's wrong.
