Half-Life: Alyx is now available
on Steam,
offering a new virtual reality game set between the events of Half-Life and
Half-Life 2. This requires a VR headset, and is free for owners of Valve's
Index. There's also an article on
Steam Support on streaming the game, since a headset is not required to
spectate. Here's word on Alyx:
Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. It’s the story of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race known as the Combine, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2.
Playing as Alyx Vance, you are humanity’s only chance for survival. The Combine’s control of the planet since the Black Mesa incident has only strengthened as they corral the remaining population in cities. Among them are some of Earth’s greatest scientists: you and your father, Dr. Eli Vance.
As founders of a fledgling resistance, you’ve continued your clandestine scientific activity—performing critical research, and building invaluable tools for the few humans brave enough to defy the Combine.
Every day, you learn more about your enemy, and every day you work toward finding a weakness.

Valve’s return to the Half-Life universe that started it all was built from the ground up for virtual reality. VR was built to enable the gameplay that sits at the heart of Half-Life.
Immerse yourself in deep environmental interactions, puzzle solving, world exploration, and visceral combat.
Lean to aim around a broken wall and under a Barnacle to make an impossible shot. Rummage through shelves to find a healing syringe and some shotgun shells. Manipulate tools to hack alien interfaces. Toss a bottle through a window to distract an enemy. Rip a Headcrab off your face and throw it out the window.
Absolutely the best VR game I have ever played. From the very start, just sucks you right in. I spent 15 minutes playing with markers and a wipe board, lol. Combat is great. The guns feel very real (which is an issue with quite a few games.) The lighting in this game, whew. The alien stuff in the quarantine zone. Just a fantastic job by Valve.
Now, if they could just make HL3. VR or flat, or both. Just do it!

Played for about an hour, and I'm very impressed. The environments are top notch, it controls very well, and the writing hasn't been terrible so far. I'd buy a ton more VR games if they all had this much environmental detail. The beginning section feels a lot like being right in Orwell's 1984, except with Striders and manhacks and a giant tower.

WhateverI just canceled my Valve Index VR order... already feeling less salty about being pushed to 9+ weeks after such a long wait time and with no info either. If Valve doesn't want 1000€ I am sure someone else will take it and give me what I WANT. Something to do while being stuck for months in an apartment for example.... blegh

The EU region have supply chain issues for Index. I ordered mine about twenty minutes after they reopened Index ordering on Monday, March 9th. It shipped the next day, and it arrived that Thursday, the 12th.
Whatever I just canceled my Valve Index VR order... already feeling less salty about being pushed to 9+ weeks after such a long wait time and with no info either. If Valve doesn't want 1000€ I am sure someone else will take it and give me what I WANT. Something to do while being stuck for months in an apartment for example.... blegh

But I'd go with an Index. This game is clearly optimized for it. Most reviews say that the individual finger control is better, though many also say it's hard to reach all the buttons.
But yeah, you can go cheaper on the device. You're still looking at $300 for a low end Samsung unit that may be discontinued (and is OOS everywhere), or $400+ otherwise. Plus a PC that can handle it.
I think the only sensible thing to do would be to wait a few weeks and then get a used headset off eBay. It's not like people are going to be using them for anything else after they finish this game.

I gotta admit, Valve has some balls to release the game without the hardware that supports it shipping in quantities too. I ordered the Index months ago and still listed as "8+ weeks" .. yeah, I doubt in 8 weeks from now I want to buy VR, probably rather want to buy toilet paper the way the world is going right now.
In a way it makes me appreciate the quarantine a lot more, I now realize how my parents felt when the GDR was dying... waiting a year for a car and hit like that that is not how you run a successful company. In 2 months from now I am gonna buy whatever competitor product is out just to troll Valve.. blegh.
