Half-Life: Alyx Preloads

Preloads are now underway for Half-Life: Alyx on Steam. paving the way for Monday's launch of the new virtual reality installment in the Half-Life series. This may be useful to more gamers than imagined at first. Despite the fact that it requires a virtual reality headset, PlayTracker reports more than 300,000 gamers have preordered the VR shooter (thanks VideoGamer.com). Here's word:
Valve's return to City 17 is poised to make sales record headlines next week. PlayTracker Insight tracking is showing Half-Life: Alyx has already surpassed 300.000 owners ahead of its launch on Monday, March 23rd.

This already puts the game within striking distance of the biggest Steam releases of 2020 so far like TemTem, Wolcen, Borderlands 3, Metro Exodus, and, amusingly, Black Mesa - Crowbar Collective's re-imagining of the original Half-Life game. Launch sales should propel the game into first place, pending a surprising over-performance by Doom Eternal this weekend.

VR owners account for only 1% of Steam users according to the Steam Hardware Survey, making this sales performance quite an impressive achievement.

I'd say cheers to Black Mesa. But being ahead of it in sales doesn't really say much without knowing the numbers.

I jumped out of my seat more than once in the '98 game when a head crab would suddenly jump at you. I don't think I could handle it in VR Uneasy

I setup my Index today and was messing around in The Lab to test things out: I legit jumped when a Jack in the Box I was cranking popped out of the box. Getting used to fending off Headcrabs in VR is gonna be... non-trivial.

If you want to show off your Index to your SO, pick up The Blu. So beautiful, so relaxing.

Just a word of warning, if you have anything breakable nearby be absolutely sure you move them or protect them somehow. I have slammed my old TV screen with the controller while swinging a virtual sword around. Luckily nothing broke, but know it is quite easy to lose track of your location in the virtual space.

It just adds to the immersion.

A lot of people who have barely played any good VR games are so negative about this being in VR.

If it can do what HL & HL2 did for the FPS so many years ago for VR... then it's going to be incredible, because VR when done right is mindblowing. Hope it lives up to it - I did hear that the campaign is about 15-16 hours - so that's something, all the flat/2D video footage I've seen looks great.

Always been a 3D (cyan / red, shutter glases, etc) fan. I remember playing HL1 with both types and being amazed. It felt so much like I was in the world and everything seemed so much bigger.

Now... with Alyx... I am gonna be in there more so. I am stoked.

Same! NV has had 3D support in their drivers for a longer time than people may know. Back in the early days it worked with OpenGL and 3-rd party shutter glasses. I remember playing the original Alice, Quake even Everquest in stereo. As for Half-Life - Shooting down an Osprey directly above my head and seeing the debri crash down all around me in 3D literally left me stunned.

Well, we have been talking about HL3 for how many years? So yea sure, but please, tell me how the 3D movie thing went........weren't we supposed to have it in every home?

VR doesn't interest me in the least right now. It is not that I do not like it, I think it is cool, it just isn't where I want it to be to invest time and money into it.

My main issue with VR is that you are standing there and you have to teleport around. It removes a lot of the freedom you would have with a traditional game. Seems like it would be a lot of stop-and-go gameplay and it would be easy to overwhelm the player if they had enemies rushing at you. Not to mention the fact that it takes you out of the immersion because you're not actually walking.

This is a misconception these days. So this depends entirely on the developer and the game and the level of motion sickness one can incur.

There are a lot of games where you can sit and play with an xbox controller if you want or the regular vr controllers. You aren't always forced to stand. That's just up to the game / dev.

Resident Evil 7 had full normal movement if you wanted it and you could sit.

Serious Sam VR games (1,2,3) all let you sit and play like a normal game with a controller.

There are more I am sure of it.

Same.
There are 3D treadmills but they have other limitations, like you have to be in a ring, so you cant duck very well, not to mention jump.
Not really interested in VR before that is solved. I cant have a VR-room with padded walls so nothing and nobody gets damaged/hurt.
I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

This is what VR needs, so just my opinions here, flame away all you want =):

As usual, there are people having opinions about VR here that have never tried it.
You can't compare VR to 3D movies, it's not the same at all, no interaction and no true 3D.
Then we have the people who "wait" until 3D will give them the full immersion with a running track etc (most of those have never tried VR either).

VR is pretty great today, with some stumbling blocks.
The main stumbling block for VR is the crappy controllers any headset comes with.
They are to me, the main thing that can break VR, as there is no standard and they are always clunky, demanding too much space and really, they don't do anything that a mouse and keyboard can do.
It's just a matter of implementing the mouse and keyboard properly.
I think of them as toys, and I am too old to be interested in toys.

Then we have the people that are saying that playing with mouse and keyboard breaks the immersion.
VR controllers are breaking my immersion any time I use them.
With a mouse and keyboard, I don't have to "think" how to move as it is in my spine after 30 years of gaming.
I don't teleport around in VR, I move as in any FPS game.
Non-standard controllers will spoil this every time.

However, it seems as if Alyx will allow a seated experience according to the steam page, here's one hoping it supports keyboards and mouse.

So here's one hoping Half-Life: Alyx will raise the bar.
