DOOM Eternal Released

DOOM Eternal is now available for PC and consoles, offering the latest installment in id Software's seminal first-person shooter series that began way back in 1993. The Windows edition is played through Steam, and you pick up your copy through Steam, or for 10% less (as of this writing) through Green Man Gaming. This is also available as a physical release, and retailers are listed on Bethesda.net. Paradoxically, this seems to be the least expensive option, as both Amazon and Walmart offer the USD$59.99 game for under $50.00, while there is also a pricier deluxe version for those who feel like splurging. Business aside, the previously released Official Launch Trailer offers a look at gameplay, and the Steam Listing has the following description:
Hell’s armies have invaded Earth. Become the Slayer in an epic single-player campaign to conquer demons across dimensions and stop the final destruction of humanity.

The Only Thing they Fear... Is You.
Experience the ultimate combination of speed and power in DOOM Eternal - the next leap in push-forward, first-person combat.

Slayer Threat Level At Maximum
Armed with a shoulder-mounted flamethrower, retractable wrist-mounted blade, upgraded guns and mods, and abilities, you're faster, stronger, and more versatile than ever.

Unholy Trinity
Take what you need from your enemies: Glory kill for extra health, incinerate for armor, and chainsaw demons to stock up on ammo to become the ultimate demon-slayer.

Enter Battlemode
A new 2 versus 1 multiplayer experience. A fully-armed DOOM Slayer faces off against two player-controlled demons, fighting it out in a best-of-five round match of intense first-person combat.

Of course, this comes the weekend that I have at least 6 or 10 hours of work to do.

Somehow, the entire world shuts down, and I still have to work the weekend.

That'll teach you to have a job!

Seriously though, I'll probably get this eventually, although I've read a few Steam complaints about the ammo system(ie. not much actual ammo laying around, you need to chainsaw kill for ammo?) Also apparently some creatures only die 'easily' vs specific weapon attacks, otherwise you waste a ton of ammo, etc.

Maybe a sale buy for me.

I get this complaint. I am constantly out of ammo and/or dodging endless waves of demons as I'm swapping through the guns in this rock-paper-scissor skirmish. Also forget about normal encounters as you would expect in any other singleplayer FPS game. Now it's just platforming from arena to arena with metroid-like puzzles in between for secrets. And those arena's are a thorn in the fucking eye, making zero contextual sense, with exloding barrels where no barrels should be and gleaming acrobat poles stuck in ancient stone.

I miss the 2016 maps, where the environment told the story in a show-don't-tell fashion with the occasional audio recording for extra lore. It's like I'm playing a Doom 2016 expansion pack with Challenge Maps, seriously. And where the combat flowed in 2016, here it drags and staggers for me somehow.

Yeah, sitting on my wishlist for a while, too. One review posted today compared the core gameplay to Guitar Hero, lol, the way you're supposed to match the colors with the right finishing move. Like a point comes where you're used to it and your eyes gloss over as you automatically respond to on-screen prompts.

I dunno, unless you feel all the platforming still defines this Doom as Doom on Roids, if you maybe know what I'm trying to say. Doom never had this level of platforming or metroidvania (though simple) exploration with said platforming. It's like both styles of games, on roids. Still pretty early in the game, but have come across the Super Mario Bros circular rotating fireball things. So that's a thing too lol.

So you're saying it's Doom on (Met)Roid's....?

Agree with to many systems. I didn't want a God of War version of Doom. I miss the chaotic flow and weapon based stuff in 2016. To many things to remember and very limited ammo. Doom 2016 was a power fantasy. Doom Eternal is stressful! Will have to play more to see if that stress is rewarded. The story is a bit of a yawn so far to.

You gain ammo by killing with the chainsaw.

meh, its a fun diversion during this covid-19 horseshit.

The one thing annoying me is the color pallette. Doom2016 was bright but kept the correct Mars-in-Hell thing. Doom:Eternal is like iD-does-Serous Sam. Glory kill an opponent and its like fucking neon-bright jelly beans hitting the floor.

I wish they had an ability to go back to Doom-2016 color saturation.

Unlocked it early yesterday via VPN to New Zealand and atlhough I thought that the intro / tutorial mission of Doom 2016 is still unmatched, I love every byte of Eternal except the Multiplayer (but I don't need it, I got Apex for that).
Glad to report that it also runs very smooth on my 4GB 1650GTX Thinkpad in 1080p. Of course it's just insane on my 1080 TI

the noclip documentary showed the things about doom 2016 that worked the best (for me) were basically accidental - the subversive hell-worshipping corporate pablum, the lore, the complete rejection of conventional story bullshit when the doomguy literally throws away the talking head on the screen in the beginning.

i guess it shouldn't surprise me that id would enthusiastically lean into the wrong things for a sequel.

i don't think we'll be getting enthusiastic video essays about this one.

Doom 2016 was better. I don't like these different maps, detached from one another. It feels more like I'm playing Challenge Maps instead of a campaign. Zero immersion. Also, most new gameplay features is the stuff nobody asked for ever, except for the meat hook maybe.

It's exactly as I predicted. Those goddamn circus poles.

Looks awesome, not sure when I'll get it.. but lots of complaints about the added mobility lol. I think it looks great. Doom 2016 was pretty boring at times (albeit great, I did love it), and needed more.. toys, so to speak? Hoping this one doesn't disappoint in that regard.

I am really happy I picked this up. This has got to be one of the best optimized games around. 1440p on my 1080 Ti is pushing no less than 130fps on Ultra. Looks and feels great. I really like all the systems and mechanics.

6600k@4.5, 2080 Super. 160-200fps in clusterfuck dogfights at 1440p second to highest maxed settings "Nightmare" - haven't tried Ultra Nightmare yet. Just an FYI on performance others might get against the recommend specs discussion a week or whatever ago. 4 core 4 thread cpu is surviving fine, but it is running at 90-95% usage at all times in task manager.

This is a definite sale game for me. I don't care what the reviews say (majority are good though). Same thing with 2016. It had pretty good word of mouth but I still wouldn't pay full price for just a run and gun shooter. This is like a $20 sale type, 30 at the most if I'm feeling anxious.

Will look forward to when that day comes
