Valve on Alyx and the Future of Half-Life

Gabe Newell Opens Up About Valve's Past, Present, and (Unexpected) Future on IGN is a video interview with the Valve boss who is joined by Robin Walker to discuss Valve, the Half-Life series, and in particular the imminent Half-Life: Alyx. For his part, when asked about the future Robin says "I definitely want to make more Half-Life... I think we're about as tooled up for this as we have been for a long time." At one point Gabe is asked what's the closest we've ever come, besides Alyx, to actually getting Half-Life 3. He doesn't really look back as requested, and where he takes his answer implies that success with Half-Life: Alyx will have a bearing on where the series will go from here:
"It's part of a progression, right? I mean for us it really is about... Half-Life games are supposed to solve interesting problems and, Alyx represents the collection of interesting problems and the solutions that we can use. The big gap is because, maybe we are stupid, but it didn’t seem like there was an obvious… like we don’t just crank Half-Life titles out because it helps us make the quarterly numbers. We deliberately avoid imposing that constraint on how we approach stuff. And we could be right and we could be wrong. We make mistakes and, you know, we did Steam Machines. We did Artifact was a giant disappointment. We screw things up."

"And so for us... this is actually a really powerful moment for us. Because this is as good as we get, Alyx. And we want to know, we want to find out, like, are we on the right track? We want people to come back and say 'Oh my God, the magic still is there. These guys at Valve can take this kind of experience and build something that opens our eyes.' As designers that thrills us. As players the reviewers look at and say: 'No this is legit.' And if it is not, then that’s also going to be super-powerful and super-useful for us. I think we’ve nailed it. But, for us, we've gnawed on this thing for a long time. It's time for it to go out into the real world... it's like you're sending your kid off to college. Let's see what happens! That, for us, is incredibly important, and part of our development. How everybody reacts to this is going to tell us what the next generation of changes and improvements we're going to make. Unfortunately, failure is more educational than success... I'm going for a little non-education this time around."

Yeah I didn't say 15 years I said 10.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head, Pink Tiger.
I bet you would all sing a different tune if Valve came out with a HL3 trailer that looked like the Cyberpunk trailer.
Maybe. I said I would consider HL3 if it ever was created. As for Cyberpunk -- *meh*. The trailers have looked somewhat interesting, but I'm definitely waiting for the full reviews after release. And even if they are good I'll still probably wait for a sale..

Well, about that "This isn't Half-life 3" part...
The trailer has a line from the end of EP2 in it.
Valve has said you really should replay EP2 before playing Alyx.
plus, for a while there, this link didn't originally redirect, it just displayed what you'll see if you click on it (after it does a slight redirect):

https://half-life.com/en/halflife3/

I think they're going to answer some of the questions EP2 left in the air, which might not make it ACTUALLY HL3, but...it's probably not going to be non-essential to the story, either.

Christ, you guys can’t be pleased. I’ll be enjoying the game Monday, because I’m not a whiny old man who refuses to want anything truly new.

Having just stepped out of the Alyx environments available as teaser content through SteamVR... I'm gonna guzzle this kool aid Valve is about to serve! Instantly it felt like I was there in City 17. Remember back in Half-Life 2, that feeling of walking out from the train terminal and into the streets. Once again I was awestruck, and completely ignorant of the headset and zone I created for movement in my room. The engagement is dramatic.

Make sure ya'll buy Alyx so it breaks through Valves "zero billions" glass ceiling so I can play a 3.

I love how there is literally zero competition with CP2077. Gonna be amazing and CDPR is gonna make a killing! There aren't any other interesting games right now. That's kind of a bummer, but I have a feeling that one game is gonna make that not matter.

That isn't it at all... it is just that:

It is possible if they made a HL3 it would be worth playing? Sure. Am I waiting for it? No. Do I think they will do it. No. And as Pink Tiger said, I really have no interest in VR, Half-Life or otherwise.

The whole thing to me reads a lot like, "Hey, if you want a Half Life 3, better buy Alyx or we're not even gonna think about making it."

I've no interest in VR games, and honestly, at this point even Half Life has very little draw on me. Fifteen, ten, maybe even five years ago I might have excitedly been waiting for a sequel, but now? I'm pretty much over it. Alyx doesn't excite me and, unless it was truly a radical and awesome experience, even Half Life 3 would be a wait-until-the-sale purchase for me. The original game was breathtaking and innovative, the second game was okay, but its been nearly twenty years and I've moved on since then. I can't imagine I'm the only one. Heck, there's an entire generation that's grown up without any nostalgic value to the franchise.

Yo Gabe... pretty sure Half-Life Alyx doesn't scratch the itch.

Folks are expecting a trilogy of "episodes" as Freeman... not a different protagonist.
A TRIOLOGY of episodes is what YOUR company announced. People are rightfully expecting a 3rd episode for closure.
14 years later and the 3rd episode is still not produced.

There is no closure for this with new Alyx game.

And unfortunately, unless a total modern remake of Half-Life 2 + EP1 + EP2 were included with an EP3... it's been so long that an EP3 would probably fail on it's own.
