SiN Remaster Plans

A post on Steam from remaster masters Nightdive Studios announces updates to SiN: Gold on Steam adding the Wages of SiN expansion along with a bunch of fixes. This is not all the news for Ritual Entertainment's 1998 first-person shooter, however, as PC Gamer says this is a prelude to a full remaster of the game. They don't have a ton of details on the plan, but this is expected late this year or in early 2021. Here's more:
Nightdive is working on a fully remastered version of Sin that will run on its Kex Engine, which is also used in games including Blood: Fresh Supply, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, and Forsaken Remastered. Expect the usual enhancements, like modern resolution support and a nice crisp UI. Nightdive didn't have a lot of details on the remaster to give us yet, but it's currently expected to be out in late 2020 or early 2021. The studio was able to dig up a pile of classic Sin art for us, so enjoy some overwhelmingly late '90s renders.

It was poorly received then, so I don´t get what they think they are going to accomplish now, barring an impossible remake.

Yeah, I remember playing the demo with a friend back then. It was just another generic shooter.
I still remember waiting for SiN demo in public IRC after my (November?) 1998 surgery on dial-up modem. I remember playing it without my analog bone conduction hearing aid. Hehe. Oh and I remember http://planetsin.com. Man, I'm old!

Sin episodes was almost fun. I loved the start, but then bullet sponges appear, with the sole episode lacking a powerful weapon and leaving you always short on ammo. Too often you run instead of shoot because you just lack the bullets

Didn't this game have Coop?

For some reason, I thought it did. But it only shows pvp.

While it definitely could not stand up to the phenomenon that was Half-Life (what FPS of that time could?), SiN was good entertainment in its own right. It was an excellent adaptation of the Quake II engine. I liked the level design (Levelord, booyah!) and the cheesy characters and their banter. It had cute gameplay innovations like being able to access DOS terminals and type in commands. The weapons looked cool, though they somewhat underpowered both in sound and damage. SiN was the first FPS I know to have location specific damage marks (even if it created baffling situations like a thug surviving a head shot). Sure, some of the warehouse levels were boring, but every long FPS has some filler elements.
It shot itself in the foot with a disastrous launch (in the time of 14.4kbps modems, a 20MB patch at launch just to have reasonable loading times was criminal) and didn't recover, but I suspect it has a small cult following.

On the other hand, the mission pack and the badly conceived Sin Episode(s) are rightly forgotten.

Speaking of NOLF, I really wonder why they didnt continue that series. It was very popular and objectively very well made games. Are the rights lost in the nirvana too?

NOLF 2 was an abysmal commericial failure, the cheap tie-in "Contract Jack" even more so.

The rights are probably with Warner. Nightdive came so close in aquiring the rights for the series, but they blew it by filing a NOLF trademark to force other potential rights owners to react. Warner did not respond well to extortion tactics and cancelled all talks and negotiations.

So ... every other studio might try it again, but not Nightdive.

There's definitely some other stuff from that era that would be much better to remaster, like anything Lithtech. Shogo, Blood 2, NOLF, etc

I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.
