DOOM Eternal Revised Specs

You may recall that system specifications for DOOM Eternal were released four days ago. But that was so last week, and these were removed at some point. Now there's a new post from Bethesda with launch details for the shooter sequel, including when it unlocks in various territories. This also includes revised specifications which are a bit more modest than the previous requirements. Something must have happened along the way, because they even have updated specs for physical PC copies that differ from what's already printed on the game boxes. Here's what they now say it will take to run the game:
SPECIFICATIONS

UPDATED RETAIL SPECS
There have also been some adjustments made to the minimum and recommended specs that are listed on the packaging of DOOM Eternal physical PC copies. Those changes are listed below:

Updated Minimum Spec (from what is printed on the PC box)

  • Removed Windows 8.1 as a supported operating system because it is no longer supported by AMD as of their most recent driver release.
  • Win 8.1 users with AMD GPUs will need to use driver version 19.10.1 to run the game successfully.
  • We’ve increased the resolution from 720p/60 FPS at Low Quality settings to 1080p/60 FPS at Low quality settings and have added in support for some 3GB and additional 4GB GPUs.
  • Added current gen NVIDIA GPUs that also meet the min spec performance requirements.

Updated Recommended Spec (from what is printed on the PC box)

  • We’ve increased the resolution from 1080p/60 FPS at High Quality settings to 1440p at High quality settings and have added in support for some additional GPUs at 1080p/60 FPS.
  • We’ve also reduced the system RAM requirements from 16GB to 8GB.
  • In order to hit higher performance targets, we removed the Ryzen 5 CPU and added specific i7 and Ryzen 7 CPU model numbers.
  • Recommended Specs listed on the PC box will still work as advertised
  • Added current gen NVIDIA GPUs that also meet the recommended spec performance requirements.

Added Ultra-Nightmare Spec

  • We added a “maxed out” spec for PC users

I'd be tempted to upgrade my GTX 1060 but it makes no sense with the current pricing. I got the 1060 for £180 over two years ago. If I get a GTX 2060 it would give me a 70% frame rate boost but that card costs £300, almost 70% more! It just doesn't seem worth upgrading right now with card prices still inflated due to crypto mining (same 60-series card, also a year after launch, yet it costs way more). So, I think I'm better off using the £300 towards a next gen console than upgrading the PC rig, because AMD know they can't charge the same stupid prices for their console graphics chips as they can the PC/Crypto market.

1080p, highish. Mostly what I expected.

Still think I'll go at least another year before building a new PC. This one is just over 4 years. Maybe cyberpunk makes me upgrade, maybe VR. Right now, nothing seems to really be pushing me on a 1080p monitor.

Same. I built mines 4 years ago. Started with a 970ti and handled everything I threw at it within the 2 years frame. Then I switched to the 1070ti (my current), and it's been demolishing everything as of now (at 1080p).

I feel like Cyberpunk will be the game that has me finally throw in the towel but I'm proud of this build. It was modest. Under 1k 4 years ago, only upgraded the graphic card and got the 1070ti on sale for $350 two years ago.

I haven't upgraded a thing. I got one of the fastest 970s, which admittedly adds like 2% fps over the slowest, and it's been fine.

I think my CPU may end up being an issue - it's where I cut corners on the build, as I had 12GB of perfectly good RAM in the old PC and didn't want to move to a socket that required faster RAM.

I’m still running on a 4790k. Only had one game where the CPU dragged the framerate down (AC: Odyssey) , although I expect it will become more of an issue within a year or so.

welp, i hope Bethsofts' scumbag legal dept. are happy about their reaction to GeForceNOW.

I had planned to purchase DOOM: Eternal simply because I could now play it due to Nvidias great platform that wouldn't require me to spend several hundred bucks on a new rig.

So that idea went out the fucking window.

I like how Intel funded research to show that AMD has vulnurabilities on all their CPUs since Bulldozer I think? Came out in the last week. Fucking Intel *womp womp*

If you've all been waiting this long, wait until 2021 to upgrade, that will give you DDR5, PCIe 4.0 (or 5.0), and the CPUs will be in prime shape to obliterate anything in the coming generation. Well except maybe for Star Citizen, but that's not due for another 6 or 7 generations I think...

If I didn't get a 3900x this year because I'm impulsive replacing a 3770k, then the smart move would be to wait for 2021. The AMD 4xxx series CPUs are the end of the line for that socket, so an upgrade in 2020 when they come out is inadvisable for upgradability. Their 5xxx CPUs will be the beginning of a new socket and the mobos will have lots of future upgradability in mind (DDR5 being a big one, as AMD chips LOVE memory), another 4-5 years worth if their current gen Zen is any indication.

ForgedReality, sadly your i7-980x CPU (family code name Gulftown) was left unprotected by Intel against Meltdown and Spectre.

Ryzen is said to be immune to Meltdown, and partially affected by Spectre (Intel CPU can be attacked online. Ryzen instead, mostly requires physical access or root access to the PC).

Anyway the situation is changing, cause new vulnerabilities are being claimed and very probably continued to be found.

Intel opted to not provide patches to certain CPUs released between 2007 and 2011, leaving them vulnerable. If you are using a computer powered by Bloomfield, Bloomfield Xeon, Clarksfield, Gulftown, Harpertown Xeon C0 and E0, Jasper Forest, Penryn/QC, SoFIA 3GR, Wolfdale, Wolfdale Xeon, Yorkfield, or Yorkfield Xeon CPUs, upgrading to newer hardware is advisable, independent of Spectre or Meltdown.

I know the 9900K is still "the best gaming CPU", but look at their recommended 1440p/120fps Ultra-Nightmare specs:

Intel: 9900K + cooler = $530, 95W TDP
AMD: 3700X cooler included: $290, 65W TDP

Wow good job Intel, man you guys are impressive lately.

Sheeeeiiid.... My PC is much older than that. When did the i7-980x come out? And still nothing is pushing my PC on a 4k monitor. Granted, I did upgrade videocards several times since building this machine. Currently on a 1080 Ti.

Cyberpunk might get me to build a new PC, but apparently all CPUs (Intel and AMD) have severe fatal flaws now, so maybe I won't. My CPU might actually be old enough that it doesn't suffer from those flaws.

This must hit 4 cores/8 threads of modern CPUs really hard based on those specs.

Well - I can wait. Plenty of other games out there looking great while using ALL cores and threads. Maybe there will a cheap complete edition in a few years including the contents of all "year passes" and all the upcoming performance patches.
