After a few more hours of video watching I see what Satisfactory needs next... you need to be able to build and carry machines, and additionally machines should be able to build other machines. Being able to carry a stack of constructors, power poles, and assemblers around would make late mid-game and late game building much better. It will be interesting to see if they take a turn down that possibility...

The rocket launch is final stated goal of Factorio -- many would argue that's then the game has just begun..

Is there a game with a "real point"? The purpose is fun, it certainly has about the same story as Factorio more of a story than Minecraft but I have thousands of hours in both of those games.

Most games have a point, which is to win. Even a survival game you're building in order to survive, then live comfortably. I can see where some people would find this sort of thing fun, but much like Austin Powers it's not really my bag, baby. I prefer to be working toward something than just building whatevs for no apparent reason.

It’s not JUST a sandbox. There is a progression tree, requiring you to produce specific items in large quantities to advance. Unlocking Coal power is a gigantic leap early on, as prior to that you have to manually feed all of your power producers, which burn biomass (leaves, wood...animals...). The draw to keep playing is to unlock the tech trees, and after you finish that there is a “store” in game that you buy silly/useful (and all unnecessary) additional blueprints and items.

There are also optional unlocks for things like explosives and radar.

There just isn’t a story to pull you through the tree, nor is there a final goal yet. There are even two item types and an ore type that currently have no purpose, but will be used later in the game. The devs are VERY active, it won’t be abandoned prior to completion like most EA games.

Unlocking the entire tech tree takes probably 20 hours...more, if it’s your first time playing. Using everything is another story. Nuclear and aluminum production are INCREDIBLY complex. Also, there’s a Turbo Motor, used for the top end auto-miner that takes an absolutely astounding assembly line to produce.

So there’s stuff to do, and there ARE goals, just no FINAL goal like Factorio’s rocket launch.

If you want someone to tell you what to do, this game does have that for the basis of progression. The "story" is you're a worker monkey for the giant space conglomocorp wot sent you down to this planet to strip its resources. You have milestones to fulfill, slowly but surely unlocking new tech as rewards, and later on you're tasked with shipping back shit loads of all sorts of materials on a space elevator (which is the previous major project). Each major shipment unlocks the next tier of R&D, and at some point there will be an end condition, probably once it's out of early access.

Lots of the later game stuff like nuclear power isn't available in the starting areas. Plus there are "crash sites" hidden around the map that contain alternative crafting recipes.

Right, how many people play Skyrim / Oblivion for the main quest vs. how many go off to do their own thing in the sandbox? In all my run throughs of Bethesda games, I've never once finished the main quest.

The sandbox is the game. Like back when we were kids and used the sand to just build what we imagined.

And Satisfactory is the game I invested most time into over the last year. I would say about 200 hours?

And yes, I know I am addicted to it.

Meh, 200 hours is just a dalliance, not an addiction. I have a friend with 4500+ hours in Civ 5.

And he has a family and a full time job.

I haven't played the game yet, but based on what I have seen in the Let's Plays I have watched resources tend to get farther and farther out. And there are wreckage sites where you can find things otherwise not available in the game such as alternate recipes. The landscape is diverse enough to encourage you to look for "cool places" to build things. Beyond that, nothing I'm aware of....

Yes, the devs are planning to add a campaign but I think they said that the sandbox aspect will always be the main focus. If you're familiar with Factorio, I think it could roughly be described as a 3D version of that.

In Factorio you need to survive and expand, since resources are finite though Even without enemies, expanding beyond the closest 18 tiles is always a challenge in itself... doubt the maps in this are gonna be anywhere near that size.

The world of Satisfactory is pretty big - and there are caves, mountains, so it is not flat earth. And DAMN is it pretty to look at!

The same motivation that motivates people to harvest stuff on other continents because there is more of it and easier to get there? You know - trading? Being a merchant? A producer of goods? Like what drove mankind since they even were still living in trees and traded bananas for something else?

I played enough Factorio MP to know that the moment you give people all they need to get to space they WILL NOT MOVE OUT unless they have to. Does Satisfactorio have anything that forces you to expand?

Alright, alright. I got more than 200 hours in Skyrim. But it took me years for those 200 hours. With Satisfactory, it was like a few months last year.

Hint: Family, job/s, other hobbies might take up some of my spare time, too, so 200 hours in a year in a single game is BIG for me nowadays.
