Game Developers Conference Postponed Due to Coronavirus

An Important GDC 2020 Update announces that the 2020 Game Developers Conference is being postponed due to concerns about the COVID-19 coronavirus. Word is they plan to reschedule the trade show to an unspecified time this summer:
After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March.

Having spent the past year preparing for the show with our advisory boards, speakers, exhibitors, and event partners, we're genuinely upset and disappointed not to be able to host you at this time.

We want to thank all our customers and partners for their support, open discussions and encouragement. As everyone has been reminding us, great things happen when the community comes together and connects at GDC. For this reason, we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.

Lots of misinformation in this thread:

New England Journal of Medicine

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMe2002387?query=RP

"...On the basis of a case definition requiring a diagnosis of pneumonia, the currently reported case fatality rate is approximately 2%.4 In another article in the Journal, Guan et al.5 report mortality of 1.4% among 1099 patients with laboratory-confirmed Covid-19; these patients had a wide spectrum of disease severity. If one assumes that the number of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic cases is several times as high as the number of reported cases, the case fatality rate may be considerably less than 1%. This suggests that the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively."

Also, just FYI, the President did not call the virus a hoax--he called the attempt to politicize the virus by the usual suspect (D)s a hoax. It was Cher, among others, who tweeted that the President said the virus itself was a hoax. Absolutely false. Cher has a very hard time with her 6th-grade education...;) But Cher is not alone in the stupid box--many so-called "celebrities" reside there as well. Anthony Hopkins, when asked about his politics said, "I don't make political statements--because most actors look like idiots when they do!" I agree completely...;) Hopkins is one of the more intelligent, imo.

No one thinks this is as fatal as SARS. But it will likely infect significantly more people.

It's like you guys think only one stat matters. And the president said that the virus being a concern is a hoax. It is not. He's just an absolute fucking moron. He thinks everything bad for him is a hoax. There are no dumber people on the planet.

The only smart move was to cancel the conference.
If it had been announced that one infected person had attended then every attendee would be refused a flight home, put in quarantine or worse -allowed to fly home and add to the pandemic.

Quite true. Did you misread my post? I did agree it was an over-reaction. You didn't answer my question though, if it was your decision to make would you allow the conference to continue as scheduled? Seems like you are implying you would. Even though I agree the cancellation is an over-reaction, I'm not sure I wouldn't make the same decision.

The local incidence rate wouldn't be the main factor, it would be the risk associated with large gatherings (29K last year?) where many people fly in and congregate in close proximity. And Microsoft, Sony, Epic, Facebook and Kojima's studio already dropped out, with probably more over the next week if they hadn't drawn a line under it.

I'd agree it is an over-reaction. I'd also say it is not a surprising reaction. Would you want to be the person who decided to continue on with the conference if several people ended up dying from coronavirus after they caught it at the conference? I wouldn't. People are over-reacting, expect them to continue to do so. The media's coverage nearly guarantees it.

In 2017-2018, 45,000,000 people got the Flu in the USA alone and 80,000 people died from it (mostly elderly and people with chronic illness). People who aren’t usually anxious about the annual flu probably don’t need to be so concerned about the Corona virus either.

Also, the 1-3% fatality rate was mostly people with a preexisting health issues and it included the rarer forms such SARS and MERS. Most people who got the Corona virus outside of China experienced mild to moderate symptoms similar to the flu and recovered in a week or two - just like the Flu.

while im optimistic this wont be the end of everything, I was watching people say on tv that it will likely go away in the summer. "whose summer"? we dont live on a flat earth. It's summer in Australia and we are getting more and more cases now. Does that mean its going to get worse for us over the next few months by that logic. It blows my mind that anyone would say that when it comes to global issues.

If you have a mask, I think it needs to be on 24/7 to be effective. At least while you are in the convention. If you think you can take breaks with it, you might as well join those without a mask. I dunno, I just thought it looked stupid. Sure, maybe there is that chance that you deflected the virus in that 1 moment you had the mask on vs not having it on, but cmon, by having it off at any moment gives you about the same chance as someone without it.

Well, I'm hoping all is well in the next 2 weeks... I had no masks as they were all sold out. Even 2 hours away from Boston...

The masks are like ze goggles. They do nothing.

Masks are for people who are infected to prevent spraying the crowd when you cough, speak, or sneeze. They're not for healthy people. The masks you see people wearing are designed for dust, which is vastly larger than viruses. Viruses go right through them. Furthermore, the masks that do make a difference (N95s) have to be professionally fitted to be of benefit, and require a mostly clean shave.

People see people on the news wearing masks so they assume that it is the right thing to do. It is not. Avoiding contact with people and washing your hands is far, far more effective than the stupid masks.

The flu is 0.1% across the board. Each of these rates is about 20x what the regular flu is. How many people at GDC do you think are over 50? A few thousand.

But the biggest issue, unsurprisingly, is that this will kill 15% of people over 80. You guys seem to think that's cool. Others of us feel like we need to be prepared to find ways to bring that number down.

It sure would be nice if this was something we could all just shrug off. It sure would be stupid to not take every precaution possible just in case shrugging doesn't work though. I didn't think their should have been a public Kobe memorial with all those people together, let alone something like a conference at a convention center.

100%. I hope this is nothing, and expect it to not impact anyone I know, but really want totake precautions because I know several octogenarians I would like to see next year.

From the Spanish Flu wiki page:
The global mortality rate from the 1918/1919 pandemic is not known, but an estimated 10% to 20% of those who were infected died. With about a third of the world population infected, this case-fatality ratio means 3% to 6% of the entire global population died.
Far worse is this, which I found in an article about the Spanish flu I was reading recently:
Regardless of origin, one of the factors that made the influenza so deadly is that it turned the body’s natural defenses against it, unleashing an effect ominously called a “cytokine storm.” The white blood cells that are supposed to protect the body from disease become over-stimulated, producing an excessive amount of cytokines (a class of proteins intended to signal immune and endocrine responses). The cascading cytokines in turn triggered an often fatal inflammatory response leading to pancreatitis, fluid in the lunges, hemorrhaging and organ failure.

As a result, the pandemic’s highest fatality rate occurred amongst relatively young adults aged twenty to forty with strong immune systems, while comparatively sparing the lives of the very old and young.
So basically, the better your immune system, the worse the flu hit you. This situation is nowhere close to the Spanish flu.
