Out of the Blue

I know this comes right on the heels of the launch of the Blue's News support campaign, so the timing is not ideal, but as Ferris Bueller sagely put it, life moves pretty fast. So here goes:

Those of you who were part of the QUAKE community back in the day may remember Jen Bailey Bergen, though you may need to be reminded of her nickname of Mynx to draw the connection. Jen was Paul Steed's inspiration for the Mynx player model in Quake III Arena. She also quite memorably helped many gamers with her Dear Mynx advice column on Planet Quake. And now she could use our help in return. She recently suffered a pair of broken ankles, and is currently incapacitated and struggling with medical bills. This is all complicated by her preexisting rheumatoid arthritis, so she is in a world of pain of all varieties. Jen is a good egg in a bad spot, so I'm sharing this in case some of you are in a position to help her out. This page is a central hub for those raising cash to help get her through all this. Thanks Redwood for bringing this to my attention and thanks to all of you who can assist with this.

Mynx Links: Thanks Ant and Neutronbeam.
Story: Maria Sharapova retires from tennis after 19-year pro career.
Science: Researchers create new state of light. Thanks Neutronbeam.
NASA says its InSight lander has detected over 450 'marsquakes.'
Media: Drone in storm - Ciara.
Gliding.
I'm Thirsty!
Follow-up: Coronavirus closures reveal vast scale of China’s secretive wildlife farm industry. Thanks Jdreyer and Max.
No Time To Die is reportedly almost three hours long – a new Bond movie record.

The military isn't socialist, otherwise they would have taken over the US and imposed socialism!!1

That socialist garbage of healthcare provided by the government and all that is pure crap. IT DOESN'T WORK. That, and all other socialist ideas have no place in a free society and history has proven this.

Dear SirKnight,

All the other developed countries: "What am I to you? Oh I guess we're not a free society and our healthcare systems have been failing for close to a century now? Well, that's news... I guess"

You SirKnight drank WAY too much psychedelic kool-aid, you completely lost connection with reality.

Yours truly, signed:

All the 1st world countries except the US who still somehow has not caught up to 20th century ( yes 20th, not 21th ) basic standards.

How the hell did she break both ankles? Boy it's good thing she doesn't live in one of those evil socialist countries where she's be taken care of without ending up homeless or dead or both. Wry

I have a feeling the new Bond film is going to suck. Would hate to be stuck in a theater for 3 hours subjected to it after shelling out how many hundreds of dollars it is these days for admission and concession snacks.

Oh I loved reading Dear Mynx back then. I remember reading it a lot in my High School's computer lab and even got some friends to start reading it, even though they were not interested in Quake.

I miss those days of the "Planet" sites, before IGN bought them up and killed them off. Voodoo Extreme was another site I went to constantly that was also killed by IGN. Ugh.
I miss those old days. At least, BN is still alive. We just need to support it!

Given that this is the fourth or fifth potential pandemic virus to jump from animals to humans in China in the past two decades, I wonder if the government will finally assess and regulate their live animal markets and meat choices.

You can have that too, all you need is 2 world wars.

Btw, I can't believe I am with Cutter here, but how on earth do you break BOTH ankles. I don't understand how that is even possible? And the fact it IS possible is scary AF.
It's easy. You drop LSD, then jump off a third story balcony. Or so I'm told.

Edit: Ninja'd by Mr. Tact.
I wonder if she has osteoporosis, and that contributed to the breaks.

First thing that came to mind for me was jumping from a height... not sure if there is a height which would break your ankles but otherwise leave you uninjured... only other thing I could think of is a car accident or some industrial accident where the ankles get crushed... *shrug*

Edit: Scooped!

i'd guess serious car accident.

i've always leaned right when it comes to politics, but i think it's time to give universal healthcare a shot. it clearly works in other countries, and our current system is a joke. we can't let inflexible ideology stand in the way of trying new things. at some point one has to admit they were wrong, or we'll never find the road to the truth.

I don't often agree with Cutter, but QFT. Fuck this system, its absurd that the US still doesn't have decent healthcare coverage for its citizens. Healthcare should be a right and not a privilege.

And who do you propose pays for this? Healthy people? GTFO.
That's how any insurance works: everyone pays, and those that get sick use the service. Doesn't matter if it's private or government run. How did you expect it to work?
Don't even bring up insurance companies, they are 100% responsible for the high costs, not the gov.
While it's true that Medicare has lower costs than private insurance, the difference is slight. As someone who works for a health insurance company, I will tell you that while we bring in vast amounts of money, we send nearly all of it out to providers and institutions. The company is extremely frugal. I got a new laptop a few months ago, but my last one was a 2009 model. Salaries are tightly controlled, and almost no one gets over a 2% raise. This is the only place I have worked where the company did not provide tea or coffee. Cubicles are 20 years old. Etc.

The biggest waste with private insurance is the vast duplication of effort. We are constantly reinventing the wheel already invented by other companies. This would end with single payer.
