The Witcher 3 Breaks $50M Triggering Developer Payday

CD Projekt RED Tweets that that sales of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt have now passed USD$50M in sales on Steam (thanks PCGamesN). This threshold triggers a new royalty structure, and they are now entitled to 80% of sales of the RPG going forward:
The accumulated revenue from sales of The Witcher 3 on @Steam platform for the period of time between October 1st 2018 and today has exceeded 50M USD. As a result, we are now getting 80% on any subsequent sales of TW3 on Steam.

Thank you all for your support!

It says right on the tweet that it's 50 million in sales since Oct 1st of 2018.

The tier pricing didn't go in till November 30th of 2018.
Tier Pricing Announcement

So for fun:
Witcher 3 has sold over 20 million copies.

That's across all the systems.

44.5% of those between 2015 to 2018 were on PC.
2018 CD projekt presentation (page 21 for you lazy fucks)

Which means at least 9 million copies. 2016/2017 roughly sold as many copies as the first year which saw sales in the 60$ range mostly.

So let's say, 33% of the total sales were in the first year at 60$

3 million copies @ 60$ = 180 MILLION.

They have made at least 250 million off witcher 3 i'd say. Especially with the shows popularity.

30% of 180= 54 million in pure profit, Steam is a literal gold mine without the muss and fuss.

Just having the name on the Steam store page is worth a lot of money to any developer. Assuming all of those sales, or even the majority, would have happened even if it hadn't been on Steam is the problem with some of the logic I see out there. The visibility of Steam gives product placement a dollar value that people shouldn't pretend doesn't exist.

Right. Because of course CDPR would rather you not buy the game at all if you aren't going to get it on GOG so that they get 0 revenue, rather than you purchase it on Steam where they get the revenue-Valve's Cut.

And, of course, never mind that GOG simply doesn't have anywhere near the size of Steam's market presence. Seriously, if you're going to be a troll, at least be a halfway decent one.

$15,000,000 million dollars to host a file. I'm in the wrong business.

Yeah. "Host a file". That's all steam does. /s

For a single player game like Witcher 3, that's essentially all Steam is good for. I don't see any reason to buy Witcher 3 on Steam over GoG.

I own it on both, but I honestly don't think it takes a business genius to understand what they get out of having their game on Steam.

On GOG they get 100% of the sales revenue, since it's their platform.

Lower than you expected? Read it a bit more carefully...;) The $50M only covered Steam sales from 10/2018 through 2/20/2020 (and the game was selling in multiple outlets all of that time, including GOG.) The game shipped on Steam and then elsewhere in 2015!. W3 had already been breaking sales records for Witcher games for ~3.5 years before this period began.

Most games dry up and blow away 6-12 months after initial release for a variety of reasons. A game still making millions of dollars only through one of the many outlets where the game is sold, five years after it initially shipped--is unusual. I lay it all at the feet of CDPR because they continued to improve W3 through patches for a couple of years and they broadened the initial story line with quality expansions and enhancements. Result? With a couple of easy-to-install optional mods the game looks and plays wonderfully on the PC going on 5 years past it's initial ship date. BTW, EA can take its microtransactions and put them where the sun doesn't shine...;)
It is well known universally that I do not make mistakes--so, if you should happen across an error in that which I have written, please be assured that *I* did not write it!...:)

Yeah, 50 million honestly seems really low to me, considering how many months this game sat at number one in sales. Although it seems that is only from the end of October 2018 until now, so about a year and a half, and the game was released in 2015 (wow 5 years already)?

50M USD in revenue from october 2018 (when the game was already more than 3 years old) is very strong. GOG revenue comes in addition, obviously.

While The Witcher 3 clearly still is one of the best games in the genre and therefore has long legs I'm still going to assume that a lot of this comes down to the fantastic success of the netflix-series.

Anyway, I'm glad CDPR won't have finanial woes going into the release of Cyperpunk 2077.

Yeah, it looks like it's just since Valve implemented the new revenue structure so it's only from October, 2018 onward. Still, for a game that's almost 4 years old, that's a lot of sales for that period on just that platform and the higher rev share comes right when the game's getting a huge second wind because of the Netflix series. Hopefully this allows them to keep the crunch to a minimum for Cyberpunk (which I'll also be getting from GOG, like I did Witcher 3.)

Wtf, they just NOW broke $50 million on Steam!?? I thought that game had been selling well for years.

For the record, of course I bought on Gog, but I had thought CDPR did way better on Steam than that.

*EDIT* Oops, October 2018, my bad. Still...
