Are You a Game Collector?

A post on Fanatical discusses a survey of over 6,000 users on how many games constitute a games "collection." In a technical sense this should probably be two or more, but they were looking for the threshold of considering yourself a "games collector," a hobby they call a "growing trend." You may be concerned (or perhaps relieved) by their conclusion that respondents who considered themselves collectors own an average of 931 games. This seems pretty extreme, but serves their agenda well. since their online games store sells the kind of game bundles that put such a lofty total within reach. Perhaps more surprising was that their survey reported the respondents owned an average of 770 games. Here's more of the data they report:
71% of the people asked considered themselves to be collectors, each owning a whopping 931 games on average. Considering that the average amount of games owned per person works out at 770 each, most gamers are only 161 games shy of earning the ‘Game Collector’ status.

Men are closer to earning the title than women, with men on average owning 179 more. However, that’s not to say that women aren’t serious about their gaming either, 70 of them said they own over 1,000 games with a few having up to 7,000 in their collection.

In fact, 23% of the overall audience claims to have more than 1,000 games, with some boasting an incredible 20,000 Steam and console games to choose from, which takes a portion of gamers past collector status and into the elite category!

Gaming is not just reserved for the young either. The age group which boasts some of the biggest collection sizes is the 35-44s who were kids when popular mainstream gaming found its way into many households in the 1970s and 1980s.

Teenagers own the least amount of games when compared with other age groups - under 18s have on average around 525 in their collection, compared with 907 in the 35-44 age group. Respondents were also asked for their views on the hobby and the industry itself.

Puerto Rico is a great game There is very little "randomness" to it. It is almost entirely strategy and timing. Catan is the exact opposite, it is a random dice game. You can make all the best choices and still lose because everything depends on what gets rolled on the dice. It is still a fun game though. 7 Wonders walks the line between the first two. Clank! is a fun little deck building game.

I'm not sure why exactly, but I've always felt compelled to keep buying games. Some I obviously want to play, some I just wanted to help out the developers, some were a simple case of the fear of missing out. In general I always wanted to have certainty that whatever my mood there would always multiple choices available in my library. I'd say a good 20% of the games in my library are trash usually picked up as part of a bundle, but even counting the just the other 80% I'll be lucky to ever get to even a quarter of them in my lifetime.

Can i ask how much you have spent?
The link he provided estimates his Account Value ranges from $31,100 to $106,635, lowest price and today’s price.
Being as how he does not buy strictly from steam I bet he is close to the lower number +/- $10k.

Up until about 10 years ago I had all the boxed copies of some of the most popular pc games that came out between 1995 and 2004. Games like Dungeon Keeper, Warcraft 2, Diablo, MDK, Baldur’s Gate, Fallout, Sacrifice, Space Quest, Grim Fandango, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Myth, Quake 2, System Shock 2, Starsiege: Tribes, Unreal, Myst, Need for Speed, Thief: The Dark Project, No One Lives Forever, Black & White, Gothic, Half-Life, Deus Ex, Clive Barker’s Undying, and probably 50 or so more. Played all of them and some more than once (for years). Then one day I threw them all out.

So yeah, I was a collector of really popular games. The packaging for most of them was still pretty good.

Holy cow! You have over 14,000 games in your Steam account? I knew there was talk here about you having lots of Steam games, but I didn't realize it was that many. We're not worthy!

you know that Steam has an option built into the new client where you go to the support tab of the game and can have the game removed from your library permanently if you want to. once you do this, its gone forever though. so there is no going back, you would end up buying it again if you ever wanted to play it.

LOL, like it had to be that permanent.

You know there is a regular 'hide game' function, too, right? A lot of people wanted the ability to go further than that.

Yes aware of the first, now the second.
