Op Ed

  • Gaming Nexus - Bethesda Abandoned Fallout 4 VR and Skyrim VR and It's a Damn Shame.
"Steam is still selling both Fallout 4 VR and Skyrim VR at $60. There have been a few sales here and there, but these two titles, in their current state and age, shouldn’t be near a $60 price tag. And with their lack of support, it definitely shouldn’t be bought at $60.

I’m more disappointed than anything that Bethesda abandoned these two titles. While they aren’t perfect, they are still very enjoyable experiences that can offer many hours of great VR gameplay. If only Bethesda would allocate a few developers to fix some of the issues, these two titles could really be something in the VR world.

A company should stand by their product and support it with fixes when need be. Bethesda is a large enough company that this shouldn’t be an issue in dedicating a few resources to make the game run better for everyone who has bought it. But having just three patches for Fallout 4 VR and two for Skyrim VR, these two titles deserve better and it’s unfortunate that Bethesda has basically washed their hands of them."

They need to drop the prices if they aren't bothering to fix things, and allow for fans to, yet again, fix and mod things that they started with.

I think the problem is the VR market is just too small. If there were enough people buying this game then I'm sure they'd do better job supporting it. 76 was a disaster at launch (still a disaster?) but they are fully supporting it.

If you're talking Skyrim a quick ini edit allows any of the Skyrim SE mods to run on it (and as one would expect, there's a Skyrim VR subset of SE mods). It also has it's own Skyrim VR script extender.

Also, you can play it seated.

To be fair, Bethesda has made more than 3 patches for each of the rest of their inhouse titles.

On the other hand, VR is still a niche enough market that it's possible they can't justify spending more money on patches at this point in time.

Man...I did that back a month or so after launch. If I remember, the big areas to be addressed were :
- scope mod (since corrected by Beth)
- tracer mod (so that you can see where your shots go)
- trueshot mod (you hit where you aim with less RNG)
- lighting / color balance mod
- an .ini tweak that helped with the SS and framerate (which I think might have also been addressed in a Beth patch)
- mod to patch in DLC content from original

I don't know how much it costs to retune a game so it works in full VR mode but maybe it just wasn't cost effective to keep supporting the games. At any rate, Bethesda hasn't even patched out widely known bugs in the original Skyrim that released approximately 100 years ago so it is kind of par for the course.

I skipped fallout 4 because of what I had heard about their dismissal after producing it.
I check back in every few months (years?) and have not heard of anything that makes the experience worth it, even now.
Could you recommend the mods that make it worthwhile?

With a couple of mods, Fallout 4:VR is a fantastic experience. Skyrim VR is still on my laundry list. That said, between Bethesda's treatment of their VR titles, the FO76 fiasco, the multiple attempts to reign in and monetize the mod scene..... (even though it is **solely** responsible for the longevity of their titles)

I'm just about done with any of their future titles.

And if not, drop the price down to like a $20 or something.
