I will readily admit that I probably give Outer Worlds a pass on a few things just because I have been missing a game like that for a while. It is still my GotY, though. It was a standout in a (recently anyway) under-served niche.

My feelings about Outer Worlds matches yours perfectly. I'm angry about a different game with a slightly different name which is probably in the top 3 games I've ever played.

Very much disagree. It's the one game I actually installed Epic's launcher to play rather than wait for the Steam release. Just to support Obsidian, because devs making great singleplayer games these days deserve to be rewarded, I'm going to buy it again on Steam when it launches.

It's one I want to get to. The complaints often seem to be that it's something you've done before, and it's stripped down. The praises seem to be similar, that it's stripped down and is 20-40 hours instead of an unnecessary 100. With no time for 100 hour games anymore, really, this sounds like something I'd be pretty down for.

Hrm, that's great to hear that people like Outer Worlds so much, a few coworkers got it on EGS or Microsoft Pass or whatever, and enjoyed it, but the general consensus is that yes, it's 20-40 hours at most.

Hopefully it finds its way to Gog after the Steam release, I'll pick it up eventually.

These awards just show what an awful year it was for gaming originality and game design flew out the window.

Untitled Goose Game is more like a simple browser game.

Control has a decent premise and design but this is overshadowed by boring combat, the worst game engine in years along with terrible performance and rendering.
Disco Elysium is probably the single refreshingly new and well put together game in this list that isn't just a mass marketed rehash of previous games.

Just sad because there were so many good games promised in the last year or so and there have been so many disappointments. I just want my Baldurs Gate 3, System Shock 3 (probably already dead) and a BF game that doesn't suck (everything since BF4)

I've got Goose Game on Switch... really good.
I beat the normal objectives (and some extras) within the day... but it was a long day of nonstop play... and for me that's rare these days that I'm kept playing and don't get bored or distracted.

Now it's fun to start up on the handheld and try to do an extra mission or two for a short while occasionally.

That isn’t a bad idea. It is a very short game that somehow also felt way too long to me.

It is a good game (probably not game of the year, but hey it isn’t my awards show) though. I think playing in on a portable broken up in chunks (like say on commutes) might have made it more enjoyable by keeping the novel aspects more... novel.
