Out of the Blue

My recent post about being dropped again by the Amazon affiliate program prompted renewed calls for a Blue's News Patreon. Since advertising revenue is not supporting the site, it seems the time is upon us for the first steps and launch a pilot program. Patreon is something Frans and I have been discussing for some time, and our planned rewards for patrons include an ad-free version of the site. But implementing and testing this is not ready to happen yet, as it has taken a back-seat to our ongoing responsive redesign, which is still being completed. Also, since I do not have firm ideas about what sort of payments would seem appropriate, experimentation before things take a final form makes sense. Patreon suggests three supporter tiers starting at a minimum of $3.00/month. So I'll start things off by asking for feedback on what everyone thinks about that, what would be appropriate for higher tiers, and what you might eventually expect in return. It may be farfetched to imagine paying more than that basic starting price. Especially for now, since to begin, aside from supporter designations in the forums, self-satisfaction will be the main reward for every tier. But if some of you are in a position to comfortably go above and beyond, it will probably be a big factor in how successful this will be towards a self-sustaining Blue's News. So please feel free to express thoughts on Patreon, pricing tiers, and rewards in the forums or by email. And a big thank you to everyone who has expressed interest in helping in this way.

I'd happily pay $20/month to support this site with no reward necessary. I'd prefer Patreon since I already manage other ongoing donation things there but would be fine with a PayPal button to donate that is click occasionally when I remember.

Patreon is recurring payments only BTW, so no there is no way to gift Blue a large one-time gift through there, but you can certainly do that via Paypal.

As has been previously mentioned, donators can make a monthly donation, say $50, then cancel the Patreon after the initial payment goes through.

Someone mentioned Paypal, and I have a couple of Paypal subscriptions, so that would work as well. Not sure if they take a cut of that, though, since it's not a gift.

I too would be happy to send Blue an annual check, but realistically that doesn't work for everyone, and from Blue's perspective a subscription or Patreon type service is more of a guaranteed money stream. People forget to cut checks.

IMO: Anything that puts some extra money in Blue's pocket, with minimal friction for donors, is fine. Maybe Blue should just setup both a Patreon and a Paypal method, and everyone pick his own poison?

Patreon is recurring payments only BTW, so no there is no way to gift Blue a large one-time gift through there, but you can certainly do that via Paypal.

Bad idea. While you might be a reasonable person and pose no threat to Blue, giving out his address when he has a reasonably prominent Internet presence is simply a bad idea. Although if he wanted to get direct payments like that getting a P.O. Box would be a good option.

Patreon is fundamentally a racket - a simple donation button via Paypal is just as effective -
The only question I see is which one gives Blue more of each persons donation.
Remember when Patreon did this and then had to retract it almost immediately!

I’d also like to know if Blue would get more money if I gave a one time payment of $120 versus 12 monthly donations of $10.
Does the credit card fee and additional patreon charge for each individual payment eat more of 12 separate $10 dollar payments than it does with one lump sum.
If blue was a neighbor I’d hand him an envelope of cash.
If Blue sends me a DM with his new address, I'll mail him a check. Then he'll get 100%.
I’d do the same thing, but with an untraceable money order from the store. I still think putting an envelope stuffed full of cash under the windshield wiper on NIN’s van would be the safest way to get payment to the big guy.
PS I am not a bad unreasonable person, I’m just drawn that way.

An excellent point, I don't know if Patreon supports one time gifts(I'd guess it does, but I don't know it), assuming it does you should include that option. The idea of t-shirts, mugs, and mousepads is fine but for your sake I'd forgo the game server idea... I'm guessing in the long run it would end up being more effort than you want to spend.
On other Patreon sites, donators are instructed to make a large monthly donation, say $50 then cancel the Patreon after the initial payment goes through.

Blue, I've been reading Bluesnews since the beginning. It's always on my morning read list, after the comics, and before the main stream news.

I have long appreciated the well curated news links here, and frankly, I don't know where I'd go for my gaming/tech/interesting things daily news fix if you went away.

I've been using your Amazon affiliate link as my way of helping offset my use of an adblocker, and I hope it's helped.

As many others have stated, I would be happy to contribute on a monthly basis. 3-5 bucks is fine, and I personally would consider a higher tier. No reward required. The reward is the product you produce, and that allows me to continue using uBlock origin without guilt. This is worth more to me than my Wapo subscription.

I already contribute monthly to a couple of podcasts, via Patreon, so that's fine with me if it works for you.

I also would love to buy a Bluenews T-shirt. Let me recommend cottonbureau.com. Adam Savage uses them for his 'Savage Industries' T-shirts. I've bought a half dozen of them in gray and black, and they are really high quality tees. Very soft. Soft enough that I even wear them to bed.

If it's enough to help you out, then $3 would be great. I can't think of any perks that would appeal at a higher tier, I'm just thankful for the well curated news and good (bad) puns.

The only expectation I'd have from this site is for it to continue to exist.
No other "rewards" are needed.

Blue Vagina Eatable candles, not only smell like vagina they would taste like vagina [obviously upper tier] and look like a vagina [James Bond Extreme tier]!

I would do $5/month without blinking. In fact I would probably do $10 without blinking just because of all I've gotten from your site over the years. I probably owe more!

Personally I don't care about tiers or rewards, except perhaps ad-free when you get the chance to implement it. Personally I run an ad blocker and this will let me continue to do so guilt-free. But all I really care about is you being able to keep Blues News going.

Long time lurker here, but just wanted to agree with others who said please add a one time donation option as I'm not interested in adding more monthly payments on my CC.
Also like the idea of merchandise like shirts, etc. and would definitely order some items there to help the site.

Hopefully we'll see the site continue for many more years.

Hrm, Amazon is locking you out? That sucks, I've been using the Amazon blues news link for awhile now, it never gave me a message nothing was happening. Just like a multi-billion dollar corporation to not even bother saying anything was wrong.

I have never used Patreon, I don't know if I'd start now, I'll have to think about it.
