System Shock 3 Layoffs Lead to Fears for the Project

A report on GameWatcher reveals concerns about the future of System Shock 3, the planned new installment in the action/RPG series in the works at Otherside Entertainment (thanks Acleacius). This is not to be confused with The System Shock Remaster in development at Nightdive Studios. This all traces back to a post on ResetEra from December reporting layoffs at Otherside. These were confirmed in a post on the OtherSide Forums where a former System Shock 3 Community Manager expresses their own hopes that this doesn't mean the project is in trouble. Word is this all stems from the financial problems at Starbreeze that means the game is looking for a new publisher. They also note a thread on the rpgcodex forums where some users questioned Warren Spector's leadership of the project, but the famed designer is defended by another former employee OtherSide Austin employee, who further discusses problems with the project. Here's the latest on this from a week ago:
Forwarding to last Friday, the same former employee revealed that while the core systems of System Shock 3 were done, OtherSide Austin was "critically behind" in content development, following by saying that "everyone on the content side is no longer with the studio."

They added that, had Starbreeze not pulled their support as System Shock 3 publisher, the developer "would've delivered something interesting with some fresh and innovative gameplay, but a much smaller game than what people were expecting and inevitably disappointing for a sequel to such a beloved franchise."

Lastly, when another user asked if System Shock 3 was abandoned, they responded with the following: "I don't actually know what's going on, but the team is no longer employed there."

I looked up Otherside and it is run by the same people who ran Looking Glass into the ground, so no surprise.

Ha, I do the same thing. I see System Shock and conflate it all together. I'm not feeling a lot of hope for the remake, either, but it's still chugging along and giving updates, so maybe...

Didn't Arkane Studios already published SS3? Only the called it "Prey" to get the FPS fans on board which resulted in it being a flop...

Doesn't Night Dive technically own the rights? If Otherside goes belly up, I guess they could find someone else?

Well, the doctors are gone and the mother is dead...
So, there’s still hope??
Nope.

Na, he's busy being VERY silent after the Crytek-GIC lawsuit dissolved into nothing.

Yup, do it right or don't do it at all. This project is spiraling down the drain fast.

So instead of releasing a small/short polished game and recovering some costs or perhaps even making enough to extend the game to full length, they decided to just dump the entire thing? That's really poor business skills.

Quick, someone call Cliffy B - a project is in need of his expertise....

He's spread pretty thin what with retirement and everything, besides he'd probably ruin it by making Shodan an ichy girl.

If I had my wish, they'd abandon it altogether until they can secure a team that has the skill to do it right (which this one didn't, by limited appearance at least). Last thing I'd want is a SS3 that resembles Ascendant in any way. Furthermore, Spector, shmector. Who cares. His golden halo dried up long ago. We need more games for MIT grads.

Edit: Sounds like a perfect time to begin that SS2 replay I've been planning!

No it doesn't. I backed the kickstarter way back when but I'm not worried about losing the $20. I'm worried about not getting a new System Shock game. This project has been a mess since almost the very beginning.

EDIT: Wait - it looks like I'm talking about the remaster, not SS3.
