Microsoft Restates PC Gaming Commitment

Every year or two we get word from Microsoft about a recommitment to PC gaming. We have another of those today in an interview on PCGamesN with Jason Beaumont, program manager of Xbox Game Pass, Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, and Kareem Choudhry, corporate vice president of Project xCloud, discussing the PC and the rebranding of Xbox. Saying this is a follow through on one of those previous recommitments from back in 2017, the conversation discusses Microsoft's vision of where the PC fits into their gaming plans. Here's a bit:
Providing PC gamers with a great experience is important to the future of gaming at Microsoft. When Phil talks about playing the games you want, on the devices you want, with the people you want, that mission naturally extends our work to PC. One thing we heard from our Xbox Game Pass customers was that they also played on PC.

We also heard from a lot of PC gamers that they wanted something like Xbox Game Pass that we have on console, but for PC games. Listening to gamers meant we could focus our work on Xbox Game Pass for PC (beta) and form a close partnership with PC developers and gamers to create an experience uniquely tailored to them.

Beyond Xbox Game Pass, we also continue to support people playing together, regardless of their preferred platform, through cross-platform and cross-network play. In addition, we’ve made Xbox Game Studios titles available on Steam and also support Win32 games on Windows 10, so no matter where you play on PC, the games you want to play are available to you. All of these investments go back to that core mission Phil laid out.

You think their statements about a gaming commitment are funny? Check this out from an article I was reading about the recent issues with the Windows 10 search feature:
If you believe that yesterday’s worldwide crash of Windows 10 Search was caused by a bad third-party fiber provider, I have a bridge to sell you.
...
Windows 10 Search works even if you aren’t connected to the internet.
Go ahead. Unplug your computer. See?
...
Microsoft appears to be updating Search — the Search that runs on your machine — by changing things on its servers. There’s no user notification about changes, no permission requested or granted to change the Search software. No Patch Tuesday. No KB article. No cumulative updates. Not even a Windows Store entry to block. No documentation. Nothing you can do about it.

"We got to keep these PC guys paying until our next console comes out..... then we can dump them again for a few years ."
"I know, make a statement about our commitment to PC gaming...."

--------------------

To be fair, the PC game pass from them is a pretty good deal - but only if you are interested in single player stuff . A play through & out basically.for me.

Play through some games you normally wouldn't pay for and whatever...but that's about it.

Thanks for keeping this long-running meme alive Microsoft! The comic relief is nice amidst all of the negativity surrounding gaming.

But seriously, Gamepass is an awesome deal and they should be commended for that. And only that.

As long as they release Flight Simulator 2020 on PC with full flight stick/throttle and KB/M support, I'll be happy. Cannot wait to play this in high-fidelity 4K60! You can fly ANYWHERE in the world... even Antarctica, if the plane has the fuel for the voyage.

Edit: OMG! It has real-time snow that actually blankets!

Edit 2: A new and more glorious trailer.

I assume they use a similar form to "From the desk of: Bender", with a bunch of checkboxes like "Allow real people to test the UI" and "Extend QA to, like, a full week" and "Security? Security!" and this week's "We're really, really going to support PC gaming this time, promise, pinky swear" with a final one at that bottom that says "And this time I mean it"

They might actually mean it this time. Xbox sales really fizzled out a few years ago, and since then they've been all about cross-platform everything and spreading their software around to reach more players not on their hardware.

Credit where credit is due, they've actually been making good on it the past year. New Xbox app needs some work but its worlds better than everything before it. Gamepass for PC is actually good value. They're bringing more exclusives to the PC. Keep it up Microsoft.

Since I converted my Xbox Gold to Game Pass Ultimate for a dollar, I've played a lot of games I wouldn't have otherwise. Outer Worlds for one. Installing FFXV right now...

Hope they keep it up at least until my sub expires in 2023!
