Rod Fergusson to Lead Blizzard's Diablo Team

Rod Fergusson tweets that he's departing Gears of War studio The Coalition to join Blizzard where he will oversee the Diablo series:
Starting in March, I will join Blizzard to oversee the Diablo franchise. Leaving is bittersweet as I love our Gears family, the fans, and everyone at The Coalition and Xbox. Thank you, it has been an honor and a privilege to work with you all.

I began working on Gears of War over 15 years ago and since then, it has been the joy of my life. But now it’s time for a new adventure. I leave Gears in the great hands of The Coalition and can’t wait for everyone to play Gears Tactics on April 28.

How is his background relevant? Other than surviving as a top level suit in a successful franchise, what does he bring that will help Bliz/Act stop shooting itself in the foot and stop munging up the Diablo series?
Perhaps he has excellent managerial skills, to prevent exactly this? Making sure that this project WILL ship in more or less the intended time frame? Preventing aimless meandering, while core gameplay mechanics are constantly changed? Preventing the board or marketing from interfering with the project outside set boundaries (Oh, I've seen this feature in this successful game, you have to implement this)?

That only works if he understands and knows that the core mechanics are solid. If they are not, and he pushes it out it will end up being a huge turd.

Best answer here. Hopefully the game ends up much better because of Fergusson, but we'll see, I guess.

The only way Blizzard could gain the confidence of it's former playerbase is by (re)hiring the guys who ran Blizzard North, assuming they would ever want to come back.

At the Path of Exile convention the Schaefer brothers and Brevik said what everyone already knew that Blizzard has morphed in to a massive corporation which is focused on shareholders rather than players which is why they left so it's safe to say they'll never be back.

Don't be too hard on Blizzard - what they describe is basically inevitable once a studio gives up its independence. Sometimes it's done for financial stability. It's hard to blame them for making that tradeoff- I'm sure many of us would do the same in the same situation. Maybe not right away, but eventually. Sometimes the longtime captains of the ship just want to do something else besides run a huge studio. Trouble is that the studio will never be the same once they sell out to a publisher or just simply evolve beyond the scrappy start-up they once were. They either lose their soul and just become another cog in a massive publisher's machine, or they get absorbed and shutdown like the many once-great studios that EA killed.

The gears games suck balls. The first one was alright for the time, but man how they made shooting weird underground alien monster things boring is beyond me.

Wait, why does Blizzard need someone from the Coalition to make one of their core IPs? Are they even a game developer anymore? Has anyone checked on Blizz HQ, made sure it isn’t just like a PO Box and a strip mall unit with the WoW servers? Possibly with an Activison truck out back loaded with all the copper cabling...?

I mean Coalition has done some pretty nice stuff, but it just seems odd that Blizzard has to outsource for the lead on Diablo.

Large game developers hire all the time. It is only noteworthy because he was a high-profile member of a studio responsible for a high-profile game series. Likely Blizzard hired him because they saw in him a set of skills they need for the Diablo 4 project.

This is true and I was being a bit facetuous, but if StarCraft is tapped out for now (possibly forever) and the current WarCraft trajectory for the next expansion is already set, this is very much like handing over your crown IP. No one qualified and internal was interested?

It isn't damning, but it doesn't inspire confidence either.

Completely unrelated side note - is my above statement grammatically correct? I'm having trouble figuring out which rule applies - should it be "Regardless of whom...

I know there are a couple of English major lurkers here now and again...

Who is grammatically correct. The only thing it lacks is a comma after "helmet." I would have likely opted for "helm" instead since that denotes leadership. "Helmet" signifies preparing for a concussion (unless that was your intent).

"Regardless of who is at the helm, this company needs a win badly."

Something like that.
