Out of the Blue

You may have noticed the Amazon banners we used to have are now missing. Yup, we were thrown out of their affiliate program again. This time the reason was: "Purchases resulting from Special Links on your Site have been for personal use, resale, or commercial use, or have been made by your friends, relatives, employees, contractors, or business relations." I told them that I am 100% baffled by how this could be the case, but they were unimpressed, and denied by appeal without further explanation. This is not the only surprising such penalty the site has suffered lately, as we also had our YouTube channel deleted by Google last year. It was explained this was due to a copyright complaint from a rights holder, I pointed out that 100% of the videos there were submitted by the publishers or developers of the games they promoted, and did not even receive a response. As someone who strives to color inside the lines at all times on an internet rife with sleazebags, scammers, and liars, these are very frustrating developments. But it does not seem there is anything else I can do about them. Oh well.

It hardly seems like Blues without that Amazon banner for PS3s

That is very strange though. The Amazon bit I mean. YT is all over the place. I have seen it flag a 15+ minute video for a few seconds of menu music. When they added the option to select the game your video is of it improved things, but it will still flag for that.

It'd cheer me up to be able to contribute more directly. I've got a lot out of this site for more years than I can remember.

their stated reason basically covers everything and everyone, so what the fuck is actually allowed?

as for the YT channel, overzealous legal departments are nothing new. likely some new lawyer working for the legal dept. of one said publisher/dev threw a copyright strike of their own video that the creators allowed, trying to make a name for himself.

I would happily be a recurring, monthly donation to keep BN up and running whereas I refuse to disable my adblocker for anyone. I have used your Amazon affiliate link in the past (admittedly, when I remember).

I don't know how others feel about Patreon but...maybe a poll?
Yes. I've heard mostly praise from content creators, but there are always dessenters and obviously I have never set up an account to receive funds. So, if there is some other service/application/process/whatever which is preferred over Patreon that would probably be fine too.

Can you elaborate in how this is liberalism? Was the decision political?

People will flame me for this, but it's because they don't like "little guys" like you, Blue, getting too much power. They probably saw the site as a threat to their corporate buddies. I say this because I used to work for a very large site that got big very quickly in the first half of the previous decade, and when we started ranking high in alexa, Google did the same exact thing to us. Exact.Same.Wording. They never reinstated our account again, even after we *hired* an ex-google employee who knew the people in the ad department. It eventually stunted the site and caused everyone to give up on it and another group took it over. God knows how many times they've done that before.

I mean, no offense to anyone here, but Blue isn't a threat to anyone in that regard.

And Blue isn't dealing with their ad department. Affiliates are run out of an entire different business entity, and Amazon keeps everything very well separated. People don't talk to each other and coordinate, to the point that the people that own the ad relationship with a brand rarely know the people that own the retail relationship.

From what I've read most successful Patreons get most of their funding from a lot of people who only pay 1 or 2 bucks a month rather than donors paying $25 or $50 or whatever. For people making a living wage that would be virtually imperceptible to their budget. It's probably worth a try at least.
