EA Financials - No New Battlefield This Year

Electronic Arts Reports Q3 FY20 Financial Results, calling the preliminary quarterly results excellent. This includes a quote about the results that include an indication that the next Battlefield game will come in fiscal 2022, which starts in April 2021 according to the non-fiscal calendar: "Over the last twelve months, we have delivered record live services revenue, live services net bookings and operating cash flow," said COO and CFO Blake Jorgensen. "Our broad-based business model reduces our dependence on individual titles and enables us to deliver financial results for our shareholders by providing a constant stream of high-quality entertainment for our players. We expect live services to continue to drive growth in fiscal 2021 and for growth to accelerate in fiscal 2022, led by a new Battlefield." At the same time they are lowering their Q4 estimates, and a story on Reuters has the details, saying: "Electronic Arts Inc forecast fourth-quarter revenue below analysts’ estimates, weighed down by the delayed launch of its basketball title “NBA Live”, while its “Apex Legends” battles “Fornite” and “PUBG” to attract young gamers." Here are selected Q3 highlights and metrics:

  • Digital net bookings* for the trailing twelve months was $4.128 billion, up 15% year-over-year and now represents 77% of total net bookings.
  • During the quarter, EA launched Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for NeighborvilleTM, Need for SpeedTM Heat and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen OrderTM.
  • FIFA Ultimate TeamTM matches were up nearly 40% year-over-year from launch through Q3.
  • During the quarter, The SimsTM 4 surpassed 20 million unique players worldwide life-to-date.

* Net bookings is defined as the net amount of products and services sold digitally or sold-in physically in the period. Net bookings is calculated by adding total net revenue to the change in deferred net revenue for online-enabled games and mobile platform fees.

Their best game during this period by a country mile was Fallen Order, but investors don't care about quality; they want to know about MONEY. Which is why the focus on FIFA and "LIVE SERVICES" in this financial results report.

It's a sad testament to the state of the gaming industry when a company's best game makes them the least money.

It was a fun game, but by far graphically inferior to say Shadow of the Tomb raider

But for EA, it was a huge step in the right direction, and hopefully not the last.

JFO is near 10 million units sold and EA is happy with Jedi: Fallen Order’s sales. So are investors. So that happened on a single-player story-driven Star Wars game with no microtransactions.

In other words, EA will make more money if they focus on quality products than get-rich-quick schemes that turn off most gamers. As the article in the first link points out, ten million copies is "a pretty big number, and it makes an important point about revenue models and what consumers want from their gameplay experiences." Despite EA saying single-player is dead, JFO clearly shows it is not.

If EA didn't get the message, then they're dooming themselves.

SUM OF A BISH!

BaTTle Field V sux0rs because it has females who never ever did fought in WWII, and isn't realistic like BF1942 which was more like a totally authentic and realistic War simulator and had Nazis with jetpacks and no damn dirty females.

Ea tried to pull an assist flip too by adding some maps from BF1942 to BFVucked because they want to ruin WWII

Seems like there are very pleased with themselves and gaas, so EA votes for no changes, more of the same, so no reason to think anything is changing over there.

As much as people don't like Ultimate Team there are still more people than ever that do and. To me that is something you decide if you want to partake in like Madden and I don't judge the game because of it, because it still has the one time pay feature of playing the game with the actual teams rosters for free, if they can make another faux mode that people go crazy over so be it, some people want to spend more creating fantasy teams, consumers consuming I guess.

Nowhere in their report do they ever state the call to improve the quality of their products. For example, focus less on egregious microtransactions and more on amazing single-player experiences like Jedi Fallen Order. I feel like any company that isn't willing to make product quality their primary concern, deserves all the financial loss they get.

Ever since DICE became big partners with EA , the battlefield series has been going downhill. They were trying to make it a competitor to COD , but failed to put enough resources into it to come even close.

EA has the money, so the fault lays at the top for not committing enough teams/ people to complete their goals....

so Fiscal year 2022 starts in April 2021. Mind Blown.

Also, they should push it to fiscal year 2023, give DICE the time and space to actually create something amazing that's feature-complete at launch. They're a talented studio who needs a development cycle close to what Rockstar has, and we'd all be so much better off.
