I've been using Kaspersky for the past several years. I personally have never had any issues with it. Whether it is the best solution or not to stay protected online, I don't know.
I just don't trust Windows Defender for some reason.

Same. Been using Kaspersky for over a decade. Unobtrusive, not a resource hog, and effective.

Windows Defender isn't complete shit, but I have to wonder at the sudden push for Defender in so many articles recently.
What exactly are you wondering? Huh

Based on actual testing by AV-Comparatives there are other, better options, some of which are even legally free.

I've been using Avira for years now, based on those results; Avira has one of the better if not best track records across all testing categories for years now. Downside, the freeware version does have a popup ad every so often. As far as spyware concerns, well, if you are concerned about your privacy on a Windows 10 PC, you've already lost. Format and install Linux.

Windows Defender with a side of Malwarebytes Pro.
Was using KAV free but it was bogging the old laptop.
I spec and setup a lot of dells, they seem to always come with either 30 days or 1 year of McCafé av and I always ask if I can uninstall it and go with defender.
