Riot Slams CA Lawsuit Claims

PCGamesN hears from Riot Games, as the League of Legends developer showed them a legal filing reacting to the news that a pair of California agencies were looking to increase the $10 million settlement to the gender discrimination suit against the company. Treating the agencies like a blog, Riot says the call for a $400 million penalty "clickbait." Here's part of the summary:
In court papers supplied to PCGamesN, the League of Legends publisher says: “The DFEH’s claim that the ‘maximum exposure in back pay owed to female employees alone exceeds $400m’ is outrageous, reckless, and without any basis in fact or law. Indeed, there are numerous methodological deficiencies in how the DFEH reaches this number, each of which makes the ultimate conclusion wholly unsound.” Elsewhere in the documents, Riot says the DFEH’s claim “is completely lacking in factual or legal support and is instead rife with inflammatory misstatements and insinuations”.

Riot also accuses the DFEH of putting publicity above a fair analysis of the amount owed to the women at the heart of this legal battle: “The DFEH’s $400m number, although dramatic, is based on a flawed approach to data that is grossly distorted and misleading. As the agency charged with understanding pay equity issues, the DFEH knows this. Thus, it appears that the DFEH’s intent is not to provide a meaningful analysis of the alleged pay disparities here, but to proffer the most outlandish figure possible, in order to garner sensational headlines and pressure Riot in the public.” In a separate response, Riot called the DFEH’s claims “a clickbait number designed to get attention”.

Ah, the sublime joys of California living...;) In one way or another, the state government is doing a good job of inspiring its tax-paying base to move.
It is well known that I cannot err--and so, if you should happen across an error in anything I have written you can be absolutely sure that *I* did not write it!...;)

How are so many people in support of a company whose senior executives fondle and fart on lower employees during meetings?

It depends upon your definition of capitalism.

The US's biggest period of economic windfall came after World War II and into the 1960s. We were a much more socialist company then than we are now.

And much of the technology and industry that we celebrate came from either government labs, or government investment. That's a fairly socialist idea.

The needle has ticked way too far towards pure capitalism, and too far away from the mix we had back in the 50s and 60s.

Unregulated capitalism is a direct threat to liberty, privacy, and security. It subverts the will of the people, destroys their well being, and robs them of their prosperity.

There shouldn't even be a settlement in the first place. Riot trying to buy its way out of the fire with a paltry $10M split among 1000 women where the settlement most likely affirms Riot refusing to admit any guilt.

No one is forcing them to take the settlement. They can pursue legal restitution however they see fit. It's supposed to be compensation, not winning the lottery. How many of those 1000 women were actually harassed? And then to what degree?

What if I pay you a compliment and it's completely innocuous but you interpret it as sexual harassment? How do I have any control over how you interpret what I say? Wars have started for less. And even if I was making a pass at you does that entitle you to a multimillion dollar payout? Get real. If that's the way the world worked we'd all just be sitting around suing each other all the live long day and nothing would get done.

Yeah, from the sounds of it there were definitely a few women who were really harassed. It actually sounds like most employees were harassed - sexually or otherwise - by bad management. So where are their payouts? For everyone who ever feels hard done by by a corporation, where are their payouts? Ever been fired without cause? Lots of people are all the time, where are their payouts? Why are they any less deserving? Yet legally speaking they are. That's real discrimination in my book.

Yah, I'd assumed that it was over the top enough to be obvious....but I can (sadly) see how it might almost seem like real outrage. Capitalism is fine as an aspect of society. As the definition or religion of a society, not so much. I find it disturbing that the economic system that is best suited to sociopathy is hailed as the only basis for a successful economy. Like most things in life....it's all about a mixture.

Our place as a world/tech leader for the last 60 years might be as much due to while every other world power was having their infrastructure bombed flat, the US was ramping theirs up to fill the demand for war material.

1) It isn't about sexual harassment, it's about intentionally not promoting women and running a penis-ocracy instead of a meritocracy. Y'know, a gender discrimination lawsuit, as Blue mentioned

2) It's weird that you think people can interpret being farted on or fondled by someone multiple levels above them in the company, in a meeting, as anything other than offensive
