GFWL Caused GTA4 Steam Delisting

There's a statement from Rockstar on USgamer explaining the disappearance of Grand Theft Auto IV from Steam. GFWL met its demise several years ago, but apparently Microsoft's online service has reached out from the grave to strangle the game's Steam release with its icy fingers. Here's word:
"Grand Theft Auto 4 was originally created for the Games For Windows Live platform," reads the statement. "With Microsoft no longer supporting Games For Windows Live, it is no longer possible to generate the additional keys needed to continue selling the current version of the game. We are looking at other options for distributing GTA4 for PC and will share more information as soon as we can."

Rockstar is always a "CONSOLE FIRST, PC kind of care because PC platform made lots of $$ for them" company. Just look at RD2, even with a year late release still badly optimized.

It's not that it's "badly optimized," it's that you're playing the game on a potato. On my system, it runs consistently at 60 FPS in 4K, with nearly all the settings set to max. When I transition from the spacious outdoors to the bustling and crowded streets of San Denis, the framerate never drops below 55.

So dumb. Microsoft declared end of life for this piece of shit YEARS ago. Rockstar had YEARS to decouple GTA4 from GFWL.

Too busy making RDR2. Honestly, which would you rather have?

How about pulling off what other companies could do WHILE working on other games?

But I guess a small independent company like Rockstar with almost no funds cannot take GFWL out of older games - like other big companies could and did.

Might just be an ROI thing at this point. How many GTA4 sales are they expecting for 2020? Vs how many hours to come up with a fix for this at $100 per hour or whatever?

BTW, most of those Japanese game devs are also under this "CONSOLE FIRST, PC kind of care because PC platform made $$ for them" companies.

Niko turned down one too many invitations to go bowling with his buddy GFWL. By the time it got swapped out for Air Hockey, it was too late to save their relationship.

Microsoft couldn't be arsed to indefinitely support a tiny, likely hands-off, piece of service infrastructure, so get fucked!
Indefinitely? Who would do that? They gave enough notice about GfW's demise and ran the servers behind the scenes for 5-6 years. Everyone else removed it from their games - this is on Rockstar!
This does not appear to be about losing GFWL to authenticate existing copies of the game. It seems to be about generating keys to sell further copies.

This is why I'll never buy anything from the MS Store (GFWL 2.0). MS gets bored with things and abandons them. And RockStar's lazy asses should have removed this years ago when GFWL was shut down. It can't be that hard, XLiveLess came out the same month the game was released removing the GFWL requirement.
