It also has really amazing ocean wave tech. I was impressed by AC Odyssey having rolling waves, but this is something else.

My knee-jerk take on the game when it released was "this game isn't going to last very long" but I have a friend who enjoys playing it. Like you said, in coop it's great. Get your friends together, pilot a ship, maybe meet some other teams online who join your crew, stab them in the back and toss them overboard and steal their ship. Do pirate-y things.

I'm still not really interested in playing it but that's a pretty strong feat for them - 10 million players having tried their game. Since it's on the game pass, I suppose people aren't buying the game anymore, at least on PC anyway.

Totally this. This is basically a big pirate sandbox and is awesome with friends. The sailing/ocean mechanics are captivating.

I've heard that it's similar to RDR2 online right now. You grind in order to unlock new things to grind, then you grind some more to get some guns, grind some more to get clothes, grind some more to get hats, then when you've gotten everything and actually start shooting other players they rage at you because you're interrupting their grinding.

Most of my friends have Gamepass, and SoT is pretty entertaining to get 4 people together in. No, there isn’t any actual progression, and missions are fairly basic, but it’s the imprecision of the game that gives it that...something extra.
Single player, it’s boring as hell. Co-op is fun, with a good split between slow times like trying to figure out a location on a map, to frantically trying to save your ship from a kraken.

It is just "number of players downloaded" or something silly. The game is barely a blip on streaming services.

10 million is almost certainly the total amount of accounts created for the game, not active players or unique monthly logins. It was as far as I recall part of the Xbox Game Pass at one point, so lots of people tried it out for free.

It looks like a childs game.

Barely 700 viewers now on Twitch, the bloom is off this rose...

There's a similar game on steam called Black Eater or something, but it looks more fun with focus on lots of players on the same ship. Not just 4 players.

For the love of goodness! Total registered means nothing. What matters is how many people actually play the game now. If the game were on Steam, it would be moderately easy to extrapolate a guess based on Steam stats combined with Twitch viewers.

It's just the total number of people who have tried the game. They were running free trials within the first 6 months, and then Xbox game pass came along and made it virtually free all the time. If they had a more impressive metric to boast about, they would.

Well, it looks fun when you see people play it in streams and Youtube. And it is fun for a few hours.
