Grab and Smash
Unleash your primal instincts and incredible strength to overpower your captors. Hold them steady to create a human shield, smash their feeble bodies into walls, or throw one into another in a violent explosion of humanity.

Dynamic Soundtrack
Find your rhythm in the chaos as a dynamic soundtrack of drums, cymbals, and decapitations drive the action to the edge of mayhem.

Stylish Escape
Embrace bold colors and a dazzling perspective as you rush through corridors, open areas, and twisting labyrinths on a mad dash for freedom. Overcome all manner of opposition, nefarious traps, and breakable obstacles to find each exit and escape captivity.

I mean, a lot of things work that way? Sometimes a new player jumps in with a completely superior product; Gmail was a better webmail at launch than any of its competitors that I can think of. Apple didn't launch the iPhone with an abbreviated feature list compared to its feature phone counterparts.

If not completely superior, you'd usually want to have at least a few key features that offer an advantage over the status quo, like GOG does with its anti-DRM stance and (supposedly) their efforts to get games working on modern OSes. But I think Epic has stated they have no such ambitions, and they're not aiming for feature parity with Steam, or to have any kind of leg up besides their exclusives. Their goal, I think, is to be mostly harmless, like Origin, not to have a storefront where people want to shop, but one where they at least won't mind doing so. It seems to me that the exclusives aren't some stopgap measure while they improve their store to make it a better Steam, the improvements they're planning are just to get more people to tolerate it enough to buy the exclusives.

"Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC finds meek interest on Epic Games Store" is the headline I read today. 400k sold in its first/exclusive month.

Thanks, jacobvandy. The official trailer for RDR2 PC had 5.25 million views with 41,870 ratings and about 5,561 comments. If everyone watched the trailer three times, the ratings and comment numbers still hit 97%. That shows more people watch videos or buy and play games than leave ratings and reviews. So based on that, we can extrapolate two pieces of data. First, based on the 23,763 total scores on Steam, the number of units sold on Steam is 8-9 million. Then based on that, with Steam's entire active monthly user base of 90-100 million, 8-9 million for new Rockstar games is not far off. However, the Steam user base tends to be more active contributors to ratings and reviews, so, for the sake of realism, it might be more accurate to say RDR2 sold somewhere in the neighborhood of between 4-6 million units this month. In either case, as you noted, simship numbers don't lie. When people had a real CHOICE to buy on Steam or the Epic Games Store... they went Steam. If they had a choice between Steam or EGS for Borderlands 3 and Metro Exodus, the simship numbers reveal most would have picked Steam. Until Epic fixes that and makes their platform a store people WANT to shop on, nothing is going to fix that. Not even exclusivity. Hopefully they'll get it before Fortnite falters.

When people had a choice, they went the path of least resistance? Shocking. With insight like that you should write a book!

You're confusing the path of least resistance with the psychology of collecting. People want all their entertainment in the least number of places. That's human behavior. But even more so they want value for their dollar. Unfortunately the Epic Games Store offers no value beyond just selling a game. That people have to go to Steam to see user reviews is a sad state.

Beamer wrote on Dec 23, 2019, 18:29:
This is why Epic has exclusives, btw. Which has been explained to you a thousand times.

And I said repeatedly, Epic cannot build and maintain brand loyalty by forcing people to buy from their sub-par platform because they're the only place to buy it.

Beamer wrote on Dec 23, 2019, 18:29:

Not everything. Just the basics. And confusing everything with the basics is just stupid. If a competitor cannot provide those, they're not competing. All Epic has is their ridiculous exclusivity.

Just review the basics Steam offered. Basics like cloud-saves, shopping carts, etc. Things most video game shoppers take for granted. Then build a platform from scratch to provide those. They started with Paragon -- a repurposed Chromium launcher -- that was never designed to function as a digital store. It's a hot mess.

Edit: I wouldn't bother with RDR2 on Epic because it requires Rockstar launcher and it was cheaper through 3rd party sources during black friday sales. Only reason I would buy through Steam is to have the Steam community/friends features. Not that compelling either way to me these days for many games.

RDR2, is that the little robot from Star Wars?

I know right, the horror. totally unplayable

That has nothing to do with being unplayable. It has to do with two things.

1. Hidden ratings blind customers away from making the purchasing decisions based on what others thought.

2. Hidden ratings hide how many people use the store — case in point: 23,763 RDR2 total ratings on Steam. If enabled on EGS, the numbers would be a fraction of Steams. Nowhere is this clearer than a google search for "red dead redemption 2." Steam is organically ranked #2 right behind Rockstar's RDR2 website, which means lots of people talk about and/or link to the Steam page. Whereas Epic's Games Store uses a Google Ad to inorganically place itself in the top spot, another way of saying hardly anyone is talking about and/or link to the EGS page.

"Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC finds meek interest on Epic Games Store" is the headline I read today. 400k sold in its first/exclusive month.

You have to go there anyway, to see what the actual damn game is, and whether it has any form of multiplayer...

How hard it is to get the basics right?

Oh, and their 'search' function... lol

---
Here's a quick video and a paragraph of text. Job done. But don't worry we'll just entice them with free shit.

Epic doesn't want people to see how many use the store and it would be easy to see with Seam/EGS simship titles like Red Dead Redemption 2, Jedi Fallen Order, and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077.

They also want to give publishers more control over review bombing by simple not making it available.

The lack of reviews and ratings is anti-consumer. It only benefits publishers and protects Epic's store numbers.

He's not wrong. Also, it used to be funny that Redeye feels the compulsion to shill for EGS in every single thread about it. Now it's kind of sad. I feel embarrassed for him since he's too tone deaf to be embarrassed himself.
