PlanetSide Arena Shutting Down Next Month

Daybreak Games announces the sun is setting on PlanetSide Arena, saying servers for the free-to-play MMOFPS will shut down on January 10th. As of today all DLC and currency purchase options are no longer available, and they say that all players who made real-money purchases can keep their goods while the game remains playable, but that they will receive full refunds in their Steam Wallets once the game ends for good. Here's more on what's happening from Executive Producer Andy Sites:
After careful consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to shut down PlanetSide Arena servers.

While our team set out with an ambitious vision for a game that combined the massive-scale combat and camaraderie of PlanetSide through a diverse collection of new game modes, it has become clear after several months in Early Access that our population levels make it impossible to sustain the gameplay experience we envisioned.

As a result, PlanetSide Arena will formally shut down servers on January 10th, 2020 at 5:00 PM (PST). We are actively working with Steam to ensure that all players who made purchases during Early Access will automatically receive a full refund to their Steam Wallet after servers shut down in January.

Thank you again for your loyalty and support during Beta and Early Access. Your feedback was invaluable, and your enduring passion for PlanetSide remains the bedrock our community is built upon. As painful as it is to close this chapter so quickly, we remain deeply committed to this franchise, and look forward to continuing this journey through the PlanetSide Universe with all of you.

Wow, a 250v250 game that typically had about 20-30 people on. That map must have felt mighty empty and unplayable

Or like a single-player game?

Not by a long shot. In a narrow corridor. In an epic base defence.

I don't understand how these guys are still in business. What, exactly, is making them any money?

Wikipedia says Everquest 1 & 2, DC Universe Online, LOTR Online, and D&D Online, plus they still have their zombie BR game and PlanetSide 2. But they've been laying off tons of people in the past couple years (writing was on the wall for PS Arena a couple months ago).

Everyone was predicting this. All the Planetside players were like "we don't want a battle royale game, the market is overly saturated with them."

It's pretty sad when a game still in early access is shutting down. But I guess that's a good thing. Daybreak probably realized from the reception that there was little chance they would be able to put in a larger audience for it to be sustainable.

This is the second game in Daybreak's history to such down before release. The first was EverQuest Next and EQ Landmark. Daybreak shut down Next and turned Landmark into a Minecraft clone. Ever since they left SOE, Daybreak's track record has been abysmal.
