R.I.P.: Steam Controller

Noticing the Steam Controller is on sale for just five bucks in the Steam Autumn Sale, The Verge got in touch with Valve to learn the once-hyped controllers are being discontinued. There is no further explanation other than their statement that "Valve confirms that this is the last batch of these gamepads that will ever be made." They also note that shipping on these to most places will cost more than the controller itself, saying shipping to the continental U.S. looks like it's $8.00, making the total delivered cost of one of these $13.00.

I'm starting to think there are no decent gamepads out there. The Steam Controller was too weird, My Xbone Elite controller had its rubber grips fall off, and I'm on my third PS4 controller because the left stick always starts uncorrectably drifting after a year or so.
Thou art an artless, greasy tallow-catch.

I borrowed one from a friend for about a week. The layout was goofy, honestly. Think I might just be too used to the PS4 layout, at this point. Didn't notice latency all that much, but it just felt... weird. Like original X-Box Duke weird. If you're going to have that much real estate on a controller, then everything should feel and fit better against the way it rests in your hands.

i bought a couple of the steam links also when they were on sale. The charger alone was worth it, as its a perfect match for the original PSP 1000 models (only ones i have), and is a far better charger than any of the crappy ones you can buy for it nowadays.

The controller on the other hand.. not even worth $5. Worst latency in any modern controller since the DS3. Even worse than it in some regards, and just terrible at so many genres and games I love, like classic console games/emulation. If I were going to lug a controller around anywhere to use for convenience, it would have to work with those games at least somewhat decently, and this turd does not pass that basic benchmark like pretty much every other major controller does.

Snagged, just like I did the Steam Link when those were on clearance. Not a bad price for some novelty tech. Maybe the Index will go 90% off sometime, too?
yep, I got a Link for the same reasons. Probably will get one of these and sell it nib 50 years from now for $8 bones. Don't follow my investment strategy.

The new Epic controller is supposed to be the bomb, and it comes with free games. . Can't wait Wink

Excellent news and lol @ Valve for their failed, feeble attempt to turn PCs into conslows.

I bought one about a year ago on Amazon just to try it out because I was curious and I wanted to see if there existed something for the PC better than what Microsoft's Xbox pad could offer.

Short answer is, it wasn't very comfortable. I spend a few days trying to configure the "analog" part of the pad but it never moved perfectly horizontal no matter how I tuned it and the analog sticks of the Xbox pad still felt better overall.

I did like the "haptic response", as they called it. The little movement inside when you used it. Nice gimmick, but not worth sacrificing comfortable control and better support for.

Abject failure. Anybody thought these we good?

They are great if you have a steamlink device/app and don't want to lug around other controllers, since they link to the tablet without issue. Not to mention it's 100% programmable... meaning using the desktop with (when you want to do something via streaming on your desktop, like opening the browser) it is not a pain.
