Out of the Blue

CNN has word that the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade may not feature balloons this year due to the threat of high winds. I distinctly remember going to my dad's office when I was a kid to watch the parade in person. At the time it struck me as an endless streams of pointless marching bands and baton-twirling punctuated by the magical wonderfulness of those balloons. And to be honest, I still feel the same way as an adult. For me the old song I Love a Parade is only appropriate when giant balloons are involved. Take them away and the only remaining attraction will be waiting for the delivery of Al Roker's Thanksgiving Kiss of Death.

Galileo tried to teach a simple principle that adding more and more layers to a system intended to avert disaster often ironically creates them. Tim Harford's story begins with the infamous 2017 best picture Oscars mix-up. The principle can be found in all kind of applications from nuclear power plants to financial markets, and more. This 37-minutes podcast is worth a listen.
