Death Sentence for Deathgarden

A Final Letter to the Community on Steam from the Deathgarden development team has the news that they are ending development of Deathgarden: BLOODHARVEST. This asymmetrical survival/action game first entered Early Access in summer of 2018 and was re-launched earlier this year. It's still available for free on Steam, but they say their efforts at keeping it alive are coming to an end. They are going out with a bang, though, offering a new update, saying they will hold a sunset session with the developers next month, and promising to keep the servers running through the end of the year. Here are the patch notes and here's a Final Update FAQ. Here's word:
They say all good things must come to an end. Over the past few weeks, our team has been rather quiet about the development of Deathgarden. Witnessing the decreasing player base, we’ve been working on finding solutions: we sought advice, considered many different scenarios, looked at various solutions, but unfortunately, none of them would change the fate of this project. Today, it is with a heavy heart that we’re announcing the end of Deathgarden’s development. To honour the production team’s work, we have decided to give the game a meaningful last breath by finalizing every feature we’ve been working on.

Two years ago, a handful of passionate game developers at Behaviour got together to develop a new game concept. This paved the way for great talents to join the team, and we want to acknowledge the work of every single person who took part in this soulful adventure. Deathgarden was, and still is today, a project of passion. A game that we wanted to make for ourselves, but also for players around the world to enjoy.

This project made us go through a roller coaster of emotions, from the first version to the reboot, and we take pride in what we’ve accomplished. We grew a lot from the experience, as a team and as individuals, and we will keep on going, we will take risks and be innovative to meet our player’s expectations. As for the future, the Deathgarden team has been redeployed to other Behaviour projects, both live and unannounced.

All this work wouldn’t have been possible without you, the community. We want to thank you for your continuous support and contribution during the ride. We want to leave this adventure on a high note and make the work we’ve been doing these past weeks be worth it for you.

In the light of this news, we wanted to have one last moment to share with you. We will be hosting a Deathgarden’s sunset Play with the Devs livestream on December 12 at twitch.tv/deathgardengame starting at 3 pm EST to share our love for the game with you.

We will keep Deathgarden’s servers up at least through the end of the year, and you will still be able to play the game as long as matchmaking is viable. We are also making the game free today, so more people can join you.

Thank you very much for your support these past two years and we will see you again soon,

The Deathgarden Dev Team

I never buy EA games but this one was on sale once and a friend of mine and myself thought we'd enjoy the game once it's out of EA, so I bought 2 copies.

Luckily we both didn't play 2 hours yet, because we waited for the finished product.

What a scam, indeed. EA is the cancer of today's gaming market, and something your lovely Steam enabled.

What a shocking event, given Behavior's track record with their Warhammer 40,000 shooter.

Exactly as I predicted.
These devs are some of the worst Ive ever seen.
They didnt realize people only play their money maker, Dead by Daylight, because it was something new, a very good idea with the combination of the horror theme and hide and seek.
They dont realize that they suck on everything else. Their patches fuck everything up, they have no other good ideas, often actually steal ideas from the community, they milk the playerbase with quickly developed and massively flawed DLC and extremely overpriced cosmetic shit, their dedicated servers are worse than their already bad P2P netcode, they keep promising things that they never implement or even change their mind about completely a few months later, they fuck up balance even more with every change, they are as toxic as their playerbase that is frustrated by their shit, for 3 years they cant even get a working matchmaking system that links people from the same regions, with the same rank and without waiting for 20 minutes, etc, etc, etc.

With Deathgarden they thought they could put a different theme on that game, because they are good developers. But they arent. They have no clue why DbD is that popular in the first place.
I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

Your culture wars aside, this never got out of early access. That does seem kind of scamish. I personally have always advocated against early access. Also I see that they are still selling DLC for this game. They have announced that the game is ending and made it free to play but still have the DLC purchasing enabled for a game on it's last legs before they pull the plug? That pretty scamish.

What does age have to do with getting your trust broken and hating getting ripped off by grifters? Sounds like you're an ageist bigot.

Or, you know, don't buy it until it's ready.

Of course, that goes against today's "gotta have it now" crowd. Can't delay that gratification!

Taking the money and running eh? What else is new for most games in early access. This is why Early Access is so dangerous for early adopters. Most likely most of these people can't get a refund from these scammers.
