Path of Exile 2 Announced

During ExileCon today Grinding Gear Games officially announced Path of Exile 2, a sequel to their free-to-play action/RPG. This does not yet carry a launch date, and they say beta testing probably won't get underway until late next year. This page offers an Official Trailer, a Gameplay Preview Trailer, and the following details:
One Game, Two Campaigns
Path of Exile 2 is a new seven-act storyline that is available alongside the original Path of Exile 1 campaign. Both the old and new storyline lead to the same shared Atlas endgame. Path of Exile 2 retains all expansion content that has been created over the last six years and introduces a new skill system, ascendancy classes, engine improvements and more.

20 Years Have Passed
Since the death of Kitava, society has been slowly rebuilding. Ambitious men rise to fill the void and their thirst for power is once again corrupting Wraeclast.

19 New Ascendancy Classes
Path of Exile 2's characters are a new set of Exiles who fall into the same class archetypes as those in the original game. As such, they can pick from a set of 19 new Ascendancy Classes that differ from the old ones that are still available in the Path of Exile 1 campaign.

New Skill Gem System
Path of Exile 2 introduces the next generation of Path of Exile's iconic skill system. Support Gems are now socketed directly into Skill Gems, removing many of the frustrations present in the old system while maintaining all the previous depth. It's now possible to six-link every skill your character uses.

All-new Equipment
The entire progression of armour and weapons has been redone from start to finish, alongside entirely new character models and animations. All of your old microtransactions are still compatible.

And Much More
Over the next year, we'll announce a lot more information about the improvements in Path of Exile 2, such as changes to the Passive Skill Tree and other core game systems.Over the years there have been many changes that we would have loved to make to Path of Exile but couldn't, because they would break existing characters. Path of Exile 2 is an opportunity to make all of these changes in one large update.

In the Meantime...
We don't have a release date for Path of Exile 2 yet, but we're unlikely to start a Beta until at least very late 2020. In the meantime, we are continuing to release Path of Exile expansions on our regular three-month cycle. This content will be available in both the Path of Exile 1 and Path of Exile 2 campaigns.

PoE 2, color me slightly interested. It still sounds like an unmitigated grind fest aimed at trading with other players for loot, instead of finding stuff yourself in a reasonable amount of time. Visually very impressive though.

Wolcen, I had put that into my Steam wishlist a couple years ago... it looks like a completely different project now.

With all the Tencent money flying around (GGG is included), my sights are now on Wolcen. Very fun game. Though of course Tencent has money in it, too.

It's seemingly inescapable.

A friend bought me Wolcen early on, and I was sad that I just didn't enjoy it... Then they came out with the Full Chapter One content patch, with a bunch of other changes... And it was great... Did some neat things, had some cool skills... Up until the final boss, I was enjoying the shit out of it... Looking forward to the full release ; )

I get all the confusion about timing and vs D4 and what not... But this event has been planned/public for like 9+ months... The 4.0 reveal (Not sure why they're also calling it PoE 2; probably due to the new engine) has been expected... As was the next league mechanic.

It's bringing some fundamental changes to the way skill gem acquisition, usage, and leveling, which looks mostly good, but begs some questions.

It's another massive content release, much like 3.0, but yes, just like <insert 99% of companies>, it's been announced 'too soon' to get the hype train going. The irony here for me though, is that it'll just tarnish every league going forward until it's out...

Considering that D4 is years and years away and this announcement was scheduled before the D4 announcement I'd say Fuck Blizzard.

Looks like PoE with better lighting and a new char class.

I love ARPGs, but unless I can have persistent levels, I'm not interested.

Lol, a 'next-generation ARPG' with canned death animations? Are those placeholders? 'Cause we were getting beyond stacking up non-colliding bodies like veggies on a cutting board (about 1:00 in the gameplay video) 10+ years ago.

Okay, that makes a little more sense, although I'm not sure how I missed that previously. Have they said that from the beginning and I managed to overlook it somehow? Or did they come to a realization after announcing 4.0 that they wanted to call it PoE2?

This, we just learned 4 was 2. My #1 thing and I don't see it in previews is a lot more skills where you can move and fire them off at the same time. The stop to use the skill is a major limpy for me, so I gravitated the the few/builds that don't have to.

Fair question, I don't think anyone knows. They did not mention anything during the announcement, which had something like 180k people watching on Twitch (wow), about how or when they decided to call 4.0 "Path of Exile 2".

I'm confused too -- so this is in addition to the big 4.0 release of PoE? I agree it is weird timing...

Maybe the MTXs were slowing down? They need everyone to rebuy all the stash tabs in a "new game"?

4.0 is PoE2. All MTX purchased in PoE will transfer over to PoE2, no re-buying anything you've already purchased.

Statement from Chris Wilson in May 2019: "Wilson said, “That 4.0.0 expansion is going to take on Diablo 4, as far as we’re concerned. It’s the next generation of action-RPGs and represents a really big upgrade to Path of Exile.” The mega expansion will be teased at Exilecon in November with a very early build, but is still roughly “a year and a half away.”"

I think Chris said similar things before even Blizzcon 2018, about 4.0 being developed to take on D4.

Gotta admit I'm confused by the timing of this announcement.

The timing is certainly serendipitous with regards to Diablo 4, but this weekend is also the first ever Path of Exile convention. I'm sure they've been planning on this exact weekend for months.

Nice. Does this mean the first game will now get discounted from free to getting paid for playing?
