Get The Messenger for Free

The Messenger is now available for free on the Epic Games Store as part of their ongoing free game promotion. As usual, this is free to keep for those who get their copy over the next seven days. Update: Also, thanks to Dacote for pointing out the Picnic Panic DLC for the game is also currently free. Next week a new freebie will take its place, which they reveal will be Bad North. Here's the message on The Messenger:
As a demon army besieges his village, a young ninja ventures through a cursed world, to deliver a scroll paramount to his clan’s survival. What begins as a classic action platformer soon unravels into an expansive time-traveling adventure full of thrills, surprises, and humor.

  • Dynamic, acrobatic gameplay and ultra tight controls worthy of an epic ninja adventure.
  • Character upgrades, new abilities, hidden levels, and branching paths to discover.
  • Meticulously designed 8-bit and 16-bit sprites, animations, and backgrounds in the spirit of the classics.
  • A memorable cast of offbeat villains, bosses, and associates.
  • Original soundtrack by renowned chiptune composer Rainbowdragoneyes, handmade using Famitracker.

We've gone so deep in to the "retro" rabbit-hole that we're now emulating EGA graphics on 1080+ capable systems.

Will decidedly not be snagging this.

Meh. It's the easiest way for a team of 14 to get a game out there. I rather focus on the gameplay and have more games, than focus on the graphics and have fewer. It's much cheaper and less time consuming to make older styles look good.
