Out of the Blue

Welcome to the responsive redesign of Blue's News, which brings proper mobile support to the site. This was inspired by a proposal by Kxmode and I cannot thank him enough for him volunteering his expertise and hard work to make this a reality. Likewise, once again I cannot express enough gratitude to Frans, as a lot of the labor for this ended up falling on him, and he did his usual amazing job of pulling the whole project together. Finally, here's a thank you to Ant, JDreyer, and j.c.f. for helping us out by beta testing. Frans made this forum post to explain some of the work that remains before this project is 100% complete and to serve as a repository for feedback and bug reports, so feel free to post there as you see fit.

"Off" is what I'd called the uncanny valley - so close to the same, but a bit off.
That, though, will wear off on us in hours to days.

Already, the only thing off to me is the change in underlinings.

its the Font they used, its making it the text larger and harder to read. the paragraphs feel like they are crunched together now

Which change(s), exactly?

They are enabled in news stories, intentionally disabled in menu bars, and no conversion work has been done in the forums yet so the default may have changed there.

Yeah, it's where you haven't put in work yet - the forums. And, I believe, they had been in the menu. These are things that are different, not worse, and we'll all adapt to rapidly.

Not a huge fan of the new look TBH. At first I thought there was something wrong with the web server. The categories on the left are too wide so there's all this extra space and the text for the news stories is too big. It makes the site have a zoomed-in look where I can't see as much on screen so I have to scroll a lot more.

Now I'm not saying it's terrible though. It's still got that classic 90s look to it which I like. What I do find terrible is most modern web page design so this site sticking with a more old-school internet look is awesome to me.

But maybe things look too big and zoomed in b/c I'm still at 1080p. I would suspect that 1440p or 4K users probably see things differently, depending on their scaling settings.

This is what im experiencing too with the site. Not sure Ill ever get used to this look and feel.

And trust me, it s not the resolution of your monitor I've tried it on several monitors and its the same on all of them.

Other than the weirdly wide side panel (which used to be compact and nice), and the unfinished forums, I suppose I'll get used to the new look on desktop.

But I feel like the experience on my phone has been ruined. All the paragraphs are crammed with too many line breaks. I can't zoom in and out, I'm locked into that perspective. Makes reading really annoying. Or like I'm on some boomer's computer with the font zoom turned up really high for bad eyes.

Maybe it will take some time to get used to....but I agree with some of the others...something looks off. Too many different font sizes? Headers look too big compared to paragraph text, and links are bigger than quotes? I dont know. The article/story formatting could use some tweaking. And the side bar is oddly too wide. Being responsive, if I resize my browser to about half my screen (1920x1080 on a 24") it looks like a more normal size.

Mobile site is much better for me. The left side panel is a little huge but it fits in line with modern websites it feels.

There appear to be two major sizing/spacing "problems" within the forums.

First the blank filler on the left column. If your screen is wide enough you get a large blank filler on the right side of the column which is nothing but a waste of space. Second is the forum post boxes are too short. They should extend to the right until they reach the right most position of the option buttons (Create Account, Account Options, Lost Password...). I'm not sure the posts extended that far before, but they certainly seem too short now...

Looks solid on my phone, tablet and on this desktop. Glad you guys also took the opportunity to clean up some of the other cruft on the site like the PDA link and whatnot.

The wide left-hand nav is fine by me. It looks weird, but frankly, I never use the left hand nav.

Having it take a bit more space, though, makes the right hand easier to read. It's not too wide, where I have to move my head to read a line. It's also not too short, where too little text is on my screen at a time.

Like Goldiloch's final porridge, it feels just right.
