Out of the Blue

Beta testing of our new responsive redesign has gone well, so here's a thank you Frans and Kxmode, who have put in a lot of work to make it happen. Also, thank you to the handful of testers who have helped us finalize things. We are on the verge of rolling out the changes, which will probably go live tomorrow or the next day. This will cause some downtime: We're not sure how long, but it probably won't be more than 15-30 minutes. If you encounter an error because the site is unavailable, this is likely the cause. Here are some more things to know about what will change. While the site will follow the same general design for desktop users, this will now scale properly for smaller screens, and will switch to a "hamburger" style menu once it gets down to mobile size (with normal-sized headlines, no less!). This will, however, be a partial rollout, and some pages will not follow the full responsive redesign at first, most noticeably the forums. We don't yet have a time frame for when an update for these will come. Also, this comes along with some new ad units to help keep the lights on. Please feel free to offer feedback on how these affect the experience here, but also be aware that we are working on being able to accommodate the frequent requests for a way to suppress these without being haunted by your conscience (more to come). One final note, the changes include a fix for the problem that would occasionally cause the site to render white. But those of you who are using the "retro black" color scheme will have to delete their "style" cookie for the site to make this work properly. That's enough for now. We're pretty excited about the changes and are looking forward to your impressions.

Responsive Links: Thanks Ant.
Story: Star Wars Getting An Official Kabuki Adaptation. Thanks Neutronbeam.

On desktop, it's uncanny-valleying me. It looks so close, but kind of like an off-brand knockoff. Which is ridiculous, but something about the teal bar is different, and the underlines are gone from (obvious) links.

It's not worse, just so close yet slightly different. Not at all a complaint, within 24 hours it'll feel normal. Right now, it's just entertaining that it doesn't. Even the Preview and Edit Comment buttons look different to me, which probably makes me insane.

Pixel-perfect conversion from a desktop-only design to fully responsive is difficult. So instead, we focused on keeping as much of the old design as possible, while modernizing the site. It's a happy medium full of compromises.

They haven't been converted to Bootstrap yet. Patience, cricket.

Everyone, this topic is not the best place for feedback, a dedicated thread was created for that right after roll-out. I'm not responding to other potential issues raised in this here topic.

So I'm not insane!

Also, I feel as if there's less separation, both in font weight and actual space, between the title and the text of comments.

Again, inside the News forum, perhaps the title isn't important, as few ever change it.

Any chance we could nix the "author" column for the news forum? Give more real estate for the title

I've always wondered why something as fundamental as human nutrition is so poorly understood.
It's in part due to an aversion to cut open concious living humans and directly observing their bodily functions while they eat/digest food.

A lot of our current medical knowledge has its roots in rather grizly experiments done on convicts, people with mental issues and anyone else considered "lesser humans" by the experimenters.

I've always wondered why something as fundamental as human nutrition is so poorly understood. There doesn't seem to ever be a definitive answer on what the healthiest way to eat is, besides the obvious things like don't eat plutonium, watch your calories, and get the appropriate ratio of fat, protein and carbs.

How do you delete that "style" cookie? Just delete all bluesnews.com cookies?
Here are some suggestions. I wasn't aware yet that this was made more difficult since v68, so yeah, then removing all cookies would be the quick way out. As for other browsers, I dunno, rarely use them.

You'd have to log in again (no biggie), so the main thing lost would be 'read/new' status of boards/topics. I found deleting 'style' was necessary on the test server to get the style switcher to work, but see no clear reason for that in the updated JS code. It may be related to cookie name interference from the www server. You could first try it before deleting cookies.

I've run into this bug many times when using the 'New Blue' too. You know, there might be a better solution though, it's this thing called gradients...
