Ubisoft Financials

Ubisoft offers their latest financial results covering the first half of their 2019-2020 fiscal year. They paved the way for this news last week by expressing their disappointment in the performance of Ghost Recon Breakpoint and, to a lesser degree, The Division 2 and saying they were delaying the releases of Gods & Monsters, Rainbow Six Quarantine, and Watch_Dogs Legion. They note that their operating income was "affected by impairment charges recorded for Ghost Recon Breakpoint, but also point to strong PC growth, saying this is "led notably by Uplay." As is usually the case with such reports, they express an optimistic outlook despite several downturns. Here's a bit:
Yves Guillemot, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, said "Our second-quarter performance demonstrates the solidity of our back catalog, which was fueled by the strong momentum of many of our titles. Having already seen very sharp growth in the first quarter, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey delivered a further acceleration in performance compared with the previous opus in terms of sell-through, player engagement and PRI. MAUs for Rainbow Six Siege reached a record high during the quarter and its PRI continued to increase. This game is making its mark in a highly competitive environment, particularly in the esports arena.

As illustrated by our announcement last week, we are continuing to take decisions in the interests of Ubisoft's long-term future. It is as a result of this approach that we’ve been able to significantly and successfully transform our business model in recent years and create major shareholder value.

Maybe if they started pricing their games realistically. All they are are rehashes/reskins of other games and they're asking $80 for them. Even at half that most people would probably say no. Same with their Uplay+, $20 a month? Get real.

Breakpoint could have just been a big DLC add-on to Wildlands , without all the cutscene money spent , and Div 2 has been making all the same mistakes as they did with #1 ( like they didn't even make notes on what worked & didn't previously ? )

Hahaha well deserved, fuckers. Maybe try dialing down on the greed again and get rid of the annual passes in favor of season passes (I can't believe I'm asking for fucking shitty season passes but when the alternative is annual passes then season passes seem like a good deal all of a sudden). And maybe stick to one or two monetization schemes instead of plastering your games with DLC *and* annual passes *and* MTX *and* in-game advertising all at the same time.

Then make great games again instead of monetization schemes. Building HUGE boring worlds with pointless shit to do that just takes long in order to "engage" players for as long as possible while otherwise being no real fun may not be the way to go, ya know.

Finally, respect your respective franchises DNA. Ghost Recon was always a squad-based tactical fps. Breakpoint does not have a squad (yet) and it very, very rarely requires any tactical gameplay. Once you can afford a gunship helo that is pretty much immune to small arms fire you can beat every mission by death from above "tactics".
No one asked for Ghost Recon to become a Division clone. And what are stupid, repetitive, grindy daily missions doing in my single player Ghost Recon? Fuck off. Immersion breaking shit crap to the max.

I wish I could say "make shitty games, make shitty money", but sadly in the game industry that's usually not the case. :\

Well, they DID get the recent two Assassin’s Creed games right. I like Origins more than Odyssey, overall, but Odyssey was WAY bigger, and the second DLC pack was fan-fucking-tastic.

The only thing that seemed to go sideways from what I see was Breakpoint. All their other games seem well enough made for me.

The Division 2 also follows the "player engagement" formula (huge world, pointless mini-objectives with grindy firefights, generally many timesink and time stretching elements all over the place etc.).
Those games are 100% monetization vehicles first, games second and it oozes out of every pore. Ubi haven't even given it much effort to conceal it.
